Chelsea Owners in Disagreement Over New Stadium
After striking a multi-billion dollar deal with Clearlake Capital to hold minority shares of Chelsea in May of 2022, co-owner Todd Boehly is already suggesting the two partners could split up. Despite stating things are “fine” as they stand, agreement over the future of Stamford Bridge could be the deciding factor in the continuing partnership. Discussions of building a new stadium have been mentioned in the past, as well as possible buyouts. To cap off all of his contradictions, Boehly mentioned in 2019 it may take “16-20 years to figure out” the stadium situation, effectively rendering this year’s conversation moot.
Regardless of Chelsea’s future home venue, the club would certainly like to be hosting European outfits come this fall. At the moment, they are in a good place to do so. One point ahead of Man City on the table, the Blues will be optimistic of their changes of making the Champions League. But Newcastle, Brighton, Fulham, Bournemouth, and Aston Villa all wait in the wings, no more than four points off 5th place.
That sets up a thrilling race for the top 5 in the next two months. In the meantime, Chelsea are looking to bolster their defensive ranks by acquiring 19-year-old defender Dean Huijsen. They will likely have to overpay for the Bournemouth star to stay in southern England rather than jetting off to Real Madrid, who are desperate for a center-back. But the club is reportedly willing to pay over the odds to acquire Huijsen this summer.
Unfortunately, news of Huijsen’s potential arrival coincides with Jadon Sancho’s shock departure announcement. The London-born winger grew up rooting for Chelsea and saw his debut in blue as a homecoming of sorts, but a longing to return to Dortmund has trumped those feelings evidently. Sancho began his career in yellow with Watford before exchanging it for Dortmund’s particular shade, blossoming in North Rhine-Westphalia. Chelsea may accede to his request after seeing little production from the 24-year-old during his time in Fulham.
Remaining Tottenham Fixtures Paint Grim Picture
Tottenham face a difficult road ahead if they are to finish anywhere close to the top half of the table. A slew of injuries has decimated Postecoglou’s side and increased his ire with the media as of late. His standing in the club is in dire straits after a pitiful season, and it’s not hard to see why. Even an injury rash as bad as they’ve had this term should not justify Tottenham finishing this low on the table.
Reports indicate Tottenham may still sack the Greco-Australian manager even if the club wins the Europa League. The club has drawn Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarterfinals of the second-tier European competition. Looking ahead, the club has eyed some key talent they could rebuild around in 2025/26.
Sunderland wonderkid Chris Rigg is among those players the North London outfit has their eyes on. Tottenham reportedly offered 38 million euros for Rigg, which would mark a record sale for Sunderland. Interestingly, Chelsea right winger Noni Madueke has been mentioned as a potential upgrade for Brennan Johnson as well. It is likely Tottenham will have to make some moves as current players depart after a disappointing season and possible managerial switch.
Chelsea vs Tottenham Prediction
One of London’s most memorable derbies takes place next Thursday in a standalone match that will get all the attention. Under the lights of Stamford Bridge, Chelsea will look to outpace their offensive-minded opponents and get a crucial victory. But Tottenham has appeared somewhat stronger in recent months. There is ever the feeling you never really know what you’re going to get from this Spurs side.
My projections show value on Tottenham compared to the betting market. I am not too surprised by this finding: the stock is pretty low on Tottenham at the moment and Chelsea arguably could not be doing much better than they are now. The Blues feel like a club too young to compete for a title, but brimming with enough talent to feel like they could. My numbers have Tottenham as (+256) underdogs.
With that in mind, I will back Tottenham in the Asian handicap market as a way of getting odds closer to 50%. Outside of their recent away match with Fulham and their fixtures against Liverpool, Tottenham has pushed or covered +1 in all of their matches this season across all competitions. So while Tottenham have accrued plenty of losses, they have managed to keep it close in almost all of them. Back Spurs to keep it that way against Chelsea.
Odds are accurate at time of writing but subject to change.
