This weekend’s game is one of the most pivotal in recent memory, with the two clubs sitting in the top two spots of the Eastern Conference. Cincinnati Winning Recent Battles in Newly Heated Rivalry

Behind-the-scenes drama fuels arguably the most intense rivalry in the MLS at the moment. Since FC Cincinnati General Manager Chris Albright, Director of Soccer Strategy Kyle McCarthy and Head Coach Pat Noonan left the Union for their current positions in Cincinnati, the fixture between the two has experienced a sharp increase in competitiveness. Even a cold preseason match saw tempers flare with a bench-clearing brawl and a red card. Cincinnati has four wins to Philadelphia’s two in seven meetings since the mutiny.

After Cincinnati ended Philadelphia’s season in the 2022 Eastern Conference semifinals, the latter got their revenge the following year. Neither team remains in this summer’s Leagues Cup, making the race for first in the East the sole focus of each club. Through 28 matches, Philadelphia holds a two-point advantage on the table. Yet Inter Miami still poses a threat also with 46 points and three games in hand.

Cincinnati recently dropped points in a home defeat to New York City last weekend. That made it four defeats in their last five matches across all competitions, and just one win in their last four tries in domestic play. It doesn’t help that Cincinnati faces a tough schedule even past the match against the Union. Following Saturday, FCC is booked against Nashville, Orlando City and the NY Red Bulls before their season concludes.

Philadelphia Pushing for Eastern Conference Title

Philadelphia has slowly built up a league-best defense over the past few seasons and is finally reaping the benefits. Five goals less allowed than the next-best MLS side, the Union have thrived in low-scoring affairs. For context, Inter Miami has conceded 40 goals to Philly’s 26 despite three less games played.

Only an away defeat to the Red Bulls interrupts what would be a 9-match unbeaten streak across all competitions for the Union. Philadelphia most recently thumped Chicago 4-0 at Subaru Park with goals from four different scorers. Thanks to San Diego engaging in a 0-0 stalemate with Portland, the victory gave Philadelphia pole position for the Supporters’ Shield. While the Union are out of contention for the Leagues Cup, they remain in the U.S. Open Cup as semifinalists.

That leaves the Union in the mix for an unconventional domestic treble when including the MLS Cup. There are some concerns about the club, however. Dropping points against Toronto and RBNY sparked doubts, but an injury to goalkeeper Andre Blake really stoked the flames. Blake’s importance to the club cannot be overstated as a month-long timetable for his return has been floated out.

Cincinnati vs Philadelphia Predictions and Free MLS Betting Pick

Could the Supporters’ Shield be on the line Saturday night? If San Diego and Miami falter towards the year’s end, it’s certainly possible. In games between two title candidates, it’s often stated that there are six points on the line. That could lead to a more conservative gameplan from the visitors, who have a much better goal differential than Cincinnati in the event of a tiebreaker scenario.

From a betting perspective, I think there is value on both a side and a total. Philadelphia is listed as the underdog but my projections have them as a very slight favorite. However, I see more edge on the listed total. I have both teams scoring just over one goal, so a total of 2.75 is far too high. I’d actually have the total closer to a flat 2, so there is enormous value compared to my model.

The line has already moved significantly but BetUS is still offering under 3 goals at (-134). This is slightly behind the market, so I don’t mind paying the juice. In a game I see easily ending 0-0, 1-0 or 1-1, I’m more than comfortable backing the under at the current price. Go with under 3 goals at BetUS at (-134), or under 2.75 at other books. Feel free to take this down to under 2.5 if the line keeps moving by the time you read this.
