What started with 24 teams is down to four. Ahead of the penultimate round of the tournament, here are the Euro Cup semi-final betting picks to make in every game (plus a championship prediction)!
Italy vs. Spain Betting Pick
As you’d expect with two absolute heavyweights, ranked sixth (Spain) and seventh (Italy) in the FIFA World Rankings, slugging it out, the online oddsmakers are almost split on who wins. Here are the current moneyline to win the Tuesday matchup (remember, this accounts for regulation time only):
Italy is arguably the hottest-playing team in the entire world. They haven’t been beaten in almost three years and just had a streak of 1,168 minutes where they didn’t allow a single goal. Some critics were quick to say the Italians were beating up on “cup cake” teams, but after eliminating number-one ranked Belgium in the quarter-finals by a 2-1 score, that argument no longer has merit.
The Spaniards, admittedly, haven’t dazzled nearly as much this tournament. Only one of its five tourney games thus far has been won in regulation. Nonetheless, they’re playing classic Spain ball, dominating teams in the possession game.
However, we sense Spain’s luck ends here. Italy is just put together better, especially defensively. Though, it will be without left-back Leonardo Spinazzola due to injury. The Roma defender leaves a sizable void in the back for Italy, but regardless, they’re still more physical and menacing than Spain, even minus Spinazzola.
England vs. Denmark Betting Pick
The other semi-final game, being played on Wednesday, isn’t as much of a toss-up in betting circles. Across the board, the “Three Lions” are big-time favorites to reach the title game, as seen below:
Just like Italy, England has a strong case for the best-performing team of the tournament up to this point. They haven’t conceded a single goal and have outscored opponents 8-0, with six of those coming in the knockout stage.
Denmark, meanwhile, feels like a team of destiny. The team has rallied since Christian Eriksen went into cardiac arrest at the start of the tournament. In its last three matches, Denmark has overwhelmed foes to the tune of a 10-2 scoring difference. Still, talent-wise, they aren’t nearly as loaded as England.
But that actually might play to their advantage. If there’s something about the Three Lions, it’s that they’re prone to “overlooking” lesser teams. We saw that in the group stage when they tied Scotland and barely beat the Czech Republic 1-0. Our money says they do the same in this game, which ends in a regulation-time draw.
In extra time, we do expect England to outlast Denmark though. As much energy as Denmark is playing with currently, the game will take place in Wembley Stadium and you know the Three Lions will be just as energized. After some early scares, England will “flip the switch” and win before the game goes to penalties.
Bonus Bet: Betting Pick To Win Tourney
Alright, we couldn’t help ourselves. Given our previous picks to advance, we might as well predict a potential championship final featuring Italy and England. Oh boy, what a doozy this could be, which will also be held in Wembley Stadium, a huge benefit for the home country, England.
If it indeed happens, our bet would be with the Three Lions to win it all. A Spinazzola-less Italian defense can withstand a so-so attack like Spain, but we’re less confident against England. Both Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling are diabolical for defenses and the two are within reach of a Golden Boot trophy. That duo is enough to break Italy’s wall of defense.
You could always make a futures bet that England wins the championship right now. They are hovering around +150 to claim the title at most bookmakers, which is the best odds of the remaining teams. Or you could wait until the semi-final round is sorted out. In that scenario, assuming England does advance, their betting line might not be as favorable.
With the home-field advantage the rest of the way out, we’re confident enough in England to drop the bet now. If you want to maximize your betting value, make the wager before Tuesday’s game gets started.
