USA Look Slow, But Remain Perfect in 2025 Gold Cup
While pundits continue to speculate over the fit of Mauricio Pochettino for the men’s national team, USA are through to the knockout stages of the Gold Cup. Poch and Co. conceded just once in their three matches. That goal was scored by Haiti after keeper Matt Freese mishandled a bad pass, leading to a direct shot.
Clean sheets against Saudi Arabia and Trinidad & Tobago deserve “job well done” kudos, but Costa Rica will serve as their first difficult test defensively. Heading into their match against Mexico, Costa Rica had been on fire in attack.
It’s worth mentioning to laymen of the Gold Cup that this tournament typically features less prominent talent, taking a back seat to the Nations League. Additionally, this year, the Club World Cup is being played at the same time, coincidentally hosted by the United States as well. That has forced players from participating clubs to make a difficult decision to represent their club or country.
In other news, USMNT midfielder Johnny Cardoso signed to Atletico Madrid this Wednesday, finalizing a move from Real Betis. Diego Simeone reportedly considered Cardoso a top target to strengthen his midfield. Meanwhile, erstwhile-Juventus winger Timothy Weah heads to Nottingham Forest this season via transfer. While USMNT legend Tony Meola characterized the move as a demotion from the Champions League to the Conference League, Weah should have a better opportunity to grow and prosper with Forest, who are desperate for pace up front.
Can Costa Rica Leverage Strong History vs USA?
Costa Rica has a strong past against the USMNT, surprisingly enough. While the USA has won a majority of their friendlies (of which there are many), it is competitive matches in which Costa Rica thrives against their Northern contemporaries. Los Ticos have won three of the last five competitive meetings, dating back to 2017. That includes matches in the Gold Cup and in World Cup qualifying.
Costa Rica fared well against Mexico, an opponent considered roughly equal to the USA in this tournament. A scoreless draw can be seen as a “win” to the Costa Ricans, but they required some luck to pull it off. The referees chalked off a final minute stoppage-time winner for an offside infringement, leaving Mexican fans in shock. The incredible scissor kick from Santiago Gimenez would have been a candidate for goal of the tournament had it counted.

When it comes to betting on international tournaments, I love the knockout rounds. This pivotal stage gives us plenty of windows to leverage historically profitable systems on unders and draws. When the lights are at their brightest, countries play much more conservatively. For example, England, with all their offensive star power, played as boring as they possibly could in the Euros, settling for draws all the way into the final.
For all their criticisms in the final third, USA have managed to win every game they’ve played this tournament due to some tremendous defending. Freese has made a few mistakes in net but has otherwise looked strong. For starting such an inexperienced backline and goalkeeper, USA has been very impressive defensively. And the numbers don’t lie: USA has not even eclipsed 1.0 xGA TOTAL so far in this competition.
Costa Rica, on the other hand, has been leaning on their dynamic offense to earn results, but have been a bit of a mixed bag. Their 4 goals against Suriname can be largely written off against an opponent of their caliber, and a scoreless draw against Mexico spells trouble against the USMNT.
I think the play here is on the under. At a current line of 2.75, I think there’s an argument that this should be an entire half-goal lower. Go with under 2.75 total goals at (-122) at BetOnline.
