Lique 1 Matchweek 8 Preview and Betting Picks

The soccer season in France seems to be going along at breakneck speed. Already we are up to Matchweek 8 in Ligue 1

So let’s take a look at what’s happened so far and also bring you our expert soccer betting picks for this weekend’s action.

They didn’t manage to win a fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title last year. Lille managed to break up the party. But this year PSG are well on their way to ensuring that they don’t suffer the same fate again this season.

The Champions elect already have a massive gap at the top of the table, and as a result, are now not worth betting on with the top sportsbooks

In outright betting to win Ligue 1, PSG is just -2000. There is just no value there.

Ligue 1 Winner Betting Without PSG

So instead of wasting time on the outright winner market, let’s take a look at the Moneyline to win Ligue 1 without PSG.

At +250 with BetUS, Lyon is the favorites top Ligue 1 on the betting without PSG Moneyline.

Personally, I think they are a great bet here. Yes, they haven’t got off to the greatest of starts this season, but they sure gave PSG a run for their money in their league meeting at Parc des Princes last Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team needed an inspired performance by Neymar, along with a 93rd-minute winner from Mauro Icardi to see off Lyonnais.

Next in this betting market is Marseille, who have got off to a decent start. This is why they are very closely behind Lyon in the betting, at +300.

Marseille also has a game in hand on leaders PSG, and as daft as this sounds will want to keep as close as they can to the Parisians, in case all the egos explode.

Next in the betting comes Monaco at +400, and they are followed closely by defending Champions Lille, at +450

Both these teams lost key players in the summer, and both will probably struggle to compete with Lyon and Marseille for second place.

Right, let’s have a look at the fixtures for Matchweek 8.

Matchweek 8 Ligue 1 Fixtures

  • St Etienne v Nice – Sat 25th Sept
  • Strasbourg v Lille – Sat 25th Sept
  • Lyon v Lorient – Sat 25th Sept
  • PSG v Montpellier – Sat 25th Sept
  • Bordeaux v Rennes – Sun 26th Sept
  • Reims v Nantes – Sun 26th Sept
  • Brest v Metz – Sun 26th Sept
  • Troyes v Angers – Sun 26th Sept
  • Clermont v Monaco – Sun 26th Sept
  • Marseille v Lens – Sun 26th Sept

As Lille and PSG are competing in the Champions League, they will both be kicking off early on Saturday.

In the case of PSG in particular, they are a team with aspirations to win Europe’s elite trophy.

PSG are at home to Manchester City on the following Tuesday and after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Club Brugge in their opening Champions League match, I expect they will have more than an eye on the City match, and may well rotate their squad.

PSG host Montpellier this weekend.

Montpellier are a team, who shall we say, like to entertain. So far this campaign, they have scored in all of their opening seven matches. And they have conceded in all but one of their fixtures.

It’s inconceivable to think that PSG won’t score, no matter who they put on the field, but it does make the prospect of both teams scoring in this match more likely.

Therefore, my opening betting pick for this weekend is for PSG to win and both teams to score at +150 with BetUS.

Lyon to keep their run going

Moving on, and a team who seem to be on the up in France is Lyon.

As mentioned above, last weekend they more than gave PSG a run for their money. Yes, they did get off to a sticky start this campaign, but they now seem to be into full flow.

Apart from the reversal in Paris, Lyonnais have won their last three in Ligue 1. They’ve also won 2-0 away to Rangers in the Europa League, showing they are a team currently in decent enough form.

On Saturday they host Lorient in a match that they are expected to win. Odds of -275 on the Moneyline suggests this.

Lorient have had a decent start to the season in Ligue 1, and they currently sit one place above Saturday’s opponents in the table. They’ve not been prolific in scoring or letting goals in, but I expect Lorient to get chances on Saturday due to Lyon’s style of play.

Therefore my second betting pick in Ligue 1 this weekend is both teams to score in Lyon v Lorient at odds of -105.
