It’s time for our Ligue 1 betting picks for Matchday 9 in France, and it looks set to be another good week for league leaders PSG.
The Parisians march towards the Ligue 1 title continued with a 2-0 win over Montpellier last weekend. And this week they will be looking to continue their dominance.

The win gives them a 100% record with 24 points from their eight matches played so far. It also means they are now already 9 points clear at the top of the table.
It would appear the only thing that can now stop PSG is PSG themselves! Through implosion.
Rennes v PSG Betting Picks
This weekend PSG takes on Rennes in the early fixture on Sunday.
- Venue – Roazhon Park, Rennes, France
- Date – October 3rd, 2021
- Time – 7am ET
Rennes sit in 13th place in the table on 9 points from eight matches. They have won two, drawn three, and lost three.
PSG, as already alluded too has won all eight of their matches so far this season.
They even now have the added confidence boost – if one was needed – of having beaten Champions League favorites Manchester City 2-0. And on top of that, they also got to witness Lionel Messi scoring his first goal for the Parisians in the win!

After conceding plenty of goals at the start of the season, PSG now also looks to have shut up shop at the back.
On Saturday they kept their third domestic clean sheet of the season, and they followed that up with another against English Premier League champions Manchester City (although how Bernado Silva didn’t score from 1 yard out, I’ll never know!).
Mauricio Pochettino’s team will ultimately slip up at some stage soon and drop points, but with the form they are in at the moment, I can’t see it being this weekend.
In 90 minutes of match betting, PSG is an appealing-looking -160 to win on Sunday. I’m surprised to see the champions-elect at such an attractive price on the Moneyline.
So for my first Ligue 1 betting pick this weekend, I’m going for PSG to beat Rennes at -160.
Montpellier v Strasbourg Betting Picks
Moving on, and the next match I want to look at is a midtable clash involving two teams who aren’t great at defending.
- Venue – Stade de la Mosson, Montpellier, France
- Date – October 2nd, 2021
- Time – 11am ET
In six of eight Montpellier matches, both teams have scored. One of the two matches both teams failed to score in was the recent 2-0 defeat to PSG.
Three of their matches have ended with under 2.5 goals, with 5 finishing with over 2.5. In some cases, well over 2.5 goals as well.
For Strasbourg, five of eight of their matches have seen both teams score. While over 2.5 goals have won in four of their eight matches.
Match betting odds have this down as a close match. Hosts Montpellier are +137, with Strasbourg at +180.
While in the goals markets, over 2.5 goals is -137, with both teams to score at -175.
I’m tempted by the better soccer betting odds of over 2.5 goals, but I’m just concerned that as two equally matched teams, they might cancel each other out.
I can see a chance of 1-1 here, so my second Ligue 1 betting pick is for both teams to score at -175.
St Etienne v Lyon Betting Picks
Finally, onto a match involving my favorites to win Ligue 1 in the betting without PSG market, Lyon.
- Venue – Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, Saint-Etienne, France
- Date – October 3rd, 2021
- Time – 2.45pm ET
St Etienne is winless and sits bottom of the table. They have 3 points from their eight matches, drawing three and losing five.
The five defeats have come in the last five matches.
Olympique Lyonnais sits seventh in the table on 12 points. That’s just three behind second-placed Lens.
After a slow start to the season, Lyon seemed to have turned the corner when they pushed PSG all the way in Paris two weeks ago, only losing 2-1 to a 93rd-minute winner from Mauro Icardi.
Since that result, Lyon beat Troyes 3-1 at home but was then held to a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Lorient last Saturday.
The 1-1 draw could go down as a good result though, as Lyon had Emerson Palmieri sent off after just 14 minutes. Not many sides can battle for 75 minutes with just 10 men and get a positive result!
All this leads me to believe Lyon are a team in a good place. And a team full of fight.
Top sportsbooks like BetUS have St Etienne at +300 to claim their first win of the season. The draw is the same odds on the Moneyline, with a win for Lyon at -125.
I really don’t see Lyon losing this match, and at -125, I think they look excellent value for the win and are my final betting pick of the weekend matches.
