Liverpool the Pick in Tight Premier League Race

The race for the Premier League has tightened up considerably in recent weeks and Liverpool could be the best bet for the title.

Who do Bettors Favor?

Although Manchester City’s big lead in the betting markets has shortened over recent weeks, they are still the Premier League favorites, according to the best online sportsbooks. City can be backed at -200 for the league winners’ spot, with Liverpool not that far behind on +160. The only other team that could possibly disrupt the race are Chelsea, but they are priced at +20000 for an unlikely league title charge.

Betting on the Premier League Title

The current Premier League table has Manchester City still leading, but by a single point from their most persistent rivals, Liverpool. That one-point gap is technically a little smaller as Liverpool’s superior goal difference means that if they can draw level on points, they will be ahead of City.

Looking at City’s recent results, you might not immediately see the problem. Since the start of the year, they’ve won six, drawn two and lost only once, to Tottenham Hotspur in a 3-2 thriller. That form would usually be solid enough to keep a team in the lead, given the huge lead they had built up.

But most Premier League leaders have not had to cope with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. The Reds made a mockery of the absence of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane during AFCON 2021 and have won nine in a row. The two rivals are scheduled to meet again in Manchester on April 10, but at this stage, it is a surprise to see Liverpool priced up at these odds, and they are still the best bet.

Betting on the Premier League Challengers

It has been a bumpy ride for Mikel Arteta throughout most of his time as Arsenal head coach but this season the team has improved consistently and are now inside the top four, with a gap back to the chasing pack and a game in hand on some of their rivals. But having already recommended Arsenal last month, there isn’t much value left at their current odds of around -200.

Neither West Ham nor Wolves have the potential to get into the top four so if there is to be a change in the Champions League line-up, it will have to come from Manchester United or Tottenham, but at this stage, neither looks capable of the consistency required to overhaul the Gunners.

Best Bet for Premier League Relegation

Norwich are -10000 favorites in the relegation markets and that price is hard to argue with. Dean Smith’s side are four points adrift at the bottom and have played two games more than two of the three teams immediately above them. They’ve also lost their last six and haven’t won since January 21.

Burnley and Watford are slightly better positioned. Burnley have two games in hand over both Watford and Norwich and have the necessary fight and team spirit to get out of trouble, but they are making hard work of it, as are Watford, who are not yet fully responding to Roy Hodgson’s methods. The two teams meet on April 30 but there is a reasonable chance that both might be relegated by that stage as most of the teams above them have a significant points advantage.

With neither team available at particularly attractive odds, it could pay to look outside the current bottom three and Everton are the most likely candidate to get sucked into the relegation zone.

The Toffees have two games in hand over Watford and Norwich but in their current form, that may not mean a huge amount. Crucially, they have a tough run-in that includes games against West Ham, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool, as well as both Burnley and Watford, and an inexperienced young manager in Frank Lampard.

Premier League Top Scorer

This has been a vintage season in the career of Mohamed Salah, who has maintained an impressive scoring rate either side of a draining AFCON 2021 campaign. The Egyptian captain has 20 Premier League goals to his name, and that is despite the fact that he has to share the goals with Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota, who have scored 12 and 13 respectively.

Jota, along with Tottenham striker Son Heung-min, is Salah’s closest challenger, but is seven points off the pace set by his prolific team-mate and with just a handful of games remaining it would take an extraordinary run of form for either of those two, or Mane, Harry Kane or Cristiano Ronaldo to catch up.
