Man City Pushing for Champions League Spot
Despite all the negativity surrounding this club, Man City are having a great season by most club’s standards. A side like City, who have won six out of the last seven league titles, are rightfully disappointed to not even make a close push for the championship this year. City currently occupy 4th place, yet Nottingham lurks behind in 6th with a game to play on Thursday. Fortunately, the Premier League and LaLiga won the race for extra Champions League places following their strong performances in European competitions this season. That means City would still return to the Champions League with a 5th-placed finish in 2025. It’s no treble, but City should be proud of this campaign, even if they don’t want to admit it.
Wolves Safe from Relegation in 2025
On the other side of the spectrum, Wolves have very low expectations of winning any trophies anytime soon. Avoiding relegation this year was really a tremendous success after a shaky beginning to the season. Vitor Pereira has maximized the talent available for selection and done a much better job than his predecessor Gary O’Neil, sacked by the club before the holidays. Wolves are undefeated in 8 straight matches across all competitions as well, and have kept matches close against elite competition.
Indeed, Wolves lost to league winners Liverpool 2-1 away and 2nd-placed Arsenal 1-0 at home. A win against Aston Villa on the first day of February may have been the catalyst for their recent purple patch. There should be no lack of confidence in a primetime Friday night matchup in east Manchester.
