There’s another round of Major Soccer League fixtures ahead of us, and here we bring you our expert picks on this weekend’s best action.
The current season is now well underway, and teams have settled into their routines and now have the form to be judged on. This weekend I’m looking at three matches, from across both conferences.
In the Eastern Conference, I’m looking at first placed New England Revolution in their match away to Atalanta United on Saturday.
While in the Western Conference I’m looking at in form Los Angeles FC, and the match involving record-breaking leaders Seattle Sounders and Minnesota United on Sunday.
Atalanta United vs New England Revolution Picks
Starting with the Eastern Conference, and the first match we are looking at for our MLS picks is Atalanta United vs New England Revolution.
- MLS Eastern Conference – Atalanta United vs New England Revolution
- Venue – Mercedes-Benz Stadium, 125 Ted Turner Dr NW, Atlanta, GA 30303, USA
- Race Date – 17th July 2021
- Start Time – 5 pm
- Odds – Atalanta +170 | The Draw +290 | New England +140
New England sits just 3 points clear of Orlando City in the Eastern Conference, with Orlando having a game in hand.
Top sportsbooks have the two teams neck and neck in the betting, suggesting that Atalanta should prove to be a tough proposition for Bruce Arena’s New England team.
But Atalanta is a side who has struggled somewhat this season, and with Brad Guzan, George Bello, and Miles Robinson all away in international duty for the USA, this could be another bad day for The Five Stripes.
I don’t see Atalanta winning this match, but I’m a bit torn between a draw and a win for the Revs. So with this in mind, I’m going to look at the goals markets.
Both these team’s matches generally have goals in them. In both teams to score betting, the odds look a touch low at -188.7, so I’m going to go for the slightly longer odds of -140.8 in the over 2.5 goals market.
It has the feel of 2-1 to the Revs about it. backing overs covers both the 2-2 draw, and 3-1 to the New England.
Los Angeles FC vs Real Salt Lake Picks
Moving onto the Western Conference, and the first of two games I’m looking at is LAFC vs Real Salt Lake.
- MLS Western Conference – Los Angeles FC vs Real Salt Lake
- Venue – Banc of California Stadium, Los Angeles, California, USA
- Race Date – 17th July 2021
- Start Time – 7.30 pm
- Odds – Los Angeles -200 | The Draw +340 | Real Salt Lake +550
Los Angeles will be looking to take their run to three successive wins in this match, and I see little reason why they won’t.
The sportsbooks make LAFC red hot favorites at just -200, this despite there being just one place and 2 points between the teams (in favor of LAFC).
Real Salt Lake has a game in hand on Bob Bradley’s team, which would see them overhaul LA if they won it, but I still don’t see that making much difference to the outcome of this match.
LAFC looks to be in the zone. They’ve scored in their last 6 outings, and I just can’t see Real Salt Lake stopping them.
Minnesota United vs Seattle Sounders Picks
The final MLS soccer match I’m looking at this weekend is also in the Western Conference, and Seattle Sounders take their unbeaten record to Minnesota on Sunday.
- MLS Western Conference – Minnesota United vs Seattle Sounders
- Venue – Allianz Field, 400 Snelling Ave N, St Paul, MN 55104, USA
- Race Date – 18th July 2021
- Start Time – 1 pm
- Odds – Minnesota +100 | The Draw +280 | Seattle +240
Seattle Sounders have just set a new MLS record. Their 2-0 home win over Houston Dynamo just over a week ago has seen them go 13 games unbeaten since the start of the season.
In winning that match, they overtook LA Galaxy (twice), Kansas City (Wizards), and Real Salt Lake. All those sides had jointly held the previous record of 12 straight matches without defeat from the start of a season.

Despite their record run, Seattle is far from home and dry in the race to top the Western Conference. They sit only 3 points clear of 2nd placed Sporting Kansas City and are also only 5 points clear of third-place LA Galaxy – who have one game in hand on their rivals.
This is down to the fact that Seattle has drawn 5 of their 13 matches this season. Seattle may be hard to beat, but they are on the same amount of wins as Kansas and LA Galaxy.
In the grand scheme of things, Seattle’s resilience should increase its chances of success. I just wonder how the team is going to react when that first defeat comes though. And according to the odds from the top sportsbooks, their first defeat could be this weekend.
Sportsbooks make Minnesota the Favorites
Minnesota United are favorites to win at +100. For me, that’s too short, and even though Adrian Heath’s team might win, I won’t be betting on them at those odds.
In their last outing, Minnesota lost 2-0 away to Colorado Rapids. Not a disastrous result, but it was Minnesota’s 5th defeat of the season. It also meant they have now lost more matches than they have won, which is why they languish down in 7th place in the Western Conference.
This is another match where I’m looking at the goals scored market for my picks.
Like in the Atalanta vs New England match, both teams to score is way too short at -188.7, so again I’m going for over 2.5 goals at -140.8.
