Montreal Under Pressure

Montreal head coach Hernan Losada is under increasing pressure to put Montreal back on the right track, but at the moment, the team looks way off last year’s level. Its results so far in the MLS regular season have an ugly symmetry: a solitary win sandwiched by six defeats in which Montreal has failed to score a goal, a run that continued against DC United last time.

Given that this team only recorded five scoreless games in the whole of the 2022 season, it is clear just how much it has fallen away from the standards of last year.

Montreal fans will tell you that over the last few seasons, the team has been growing increasingly fragile defensively and that trend has accelerated as Losada has tried to get his team to attack its way out of trouble. No other team has allowed more goals in MLS so far this season and combined with a paltry goal-scoring record of three in seven, it has left Montreal in the Eastern Conference basement.

NY Red Bulls Struggling

The NY Red Bulls organization has been struggling, on and off the pitch, as poor results have combined with unnecessary disciplinary issues, brought on by Dante Vanzeir’s racist slur in the game against San Jose. The reaction to that appalling incident, and the relatively lenient six-game ban imposed on Vanzeir by MLS, has kept the issue simmering and a large contingent of Red Bulls fans staged a walkout in last Saturday’s game against Houston to protest that the suspension was too short.

Meanwhile, Gerhard Struber has also been facing a deteriorating situation on the pitch. The team lies 12th in the Eastern Conference, and while it has shown the ability to battle back from losing positions, it is a long way short of the level of form reached last season.

Significantly, the off-season moves in search of strikers, which led to three acquisitions, does not seem to have improved the attacking potency of the team. In fact, it is tied for the worst goal-scoring record in the East, while the usual high-pressing approach has given way to a slower and more predictable style of play that has been frustrating for fans to watch, and far less effective.

There is still a long way to go in the season and a playoff spot is well within this team’s grasp, but this is a very competitive league and the longer the slump continues, the harder it will be to pull out of.

MTS MLS Betting Head-to-Head

The head-to-head rivalry between these teams goes back to 2012 when Montreal joined MLS as an expansion team. The first-ever game between the two took place in March of that year and provided plenty of entertainment as the Red Bulls won 5-2.

The New York team also won the second game between the two that season, but Montreal had a measure of revenge in the summer of 2012, winning 2-1 at the Saputo Stadium.

Since then Montreal has had the edge over its Eastern Conference opponents, winning ten of their last nine encounters, although in the last two seasons, the record has been one win apiece.

MLS Betting Team News

The team news for Montreal looks bleak as the club is wrestling with a lengthy injury list. As many as nine players could be missing for this game, including Mason Toye and Matko Miljevic, who both have knee problems, Lassi Lappalainen, who is struggling with a left leg issue, along with Jojea Kwizera (hamstring), James Pantemis (shoulder) and George Campbell (ankle).

There was at least some good news for Montreal last weekend as new signings Bryce Duke and Ariel Lassiter made their team debuts and both should feature here again.

New York is also struggling with a lengthy injury list. Besides Vanzeir, the team will be without Frankie Amaya, Steven Sserwadda and Lewis Morgan, along with Matt Nocita and Serge Ngoma, who are both out with hamstring problems. Luquinhas missed the game against Houston due to an adductor strain, but he may be available for this match.

MTS MLS Betting Picks

Given that both these teams are struggling, some bettors may be favoring the draw, but that doesn’t look a good option here. Montreal has been conceding plenty of goals, and there is no sign of that attacking approach changing, while the visiting team is likely to find it easier to find chances against this team than any of its opponents so far. This may not be a good watch, but the Red Bulls is the value pick.
