PSG Set for European Treble?
What once looked like disaster in the Champions League for PSG has turned into triumph. Away losses to Arsenal and Bayern, a home draw to PSV, and a home loss to Atletico Madrid put PSG’s backs against the wall. Forced to earn at least 6 points in their last 3 games, the club dug deep and managed to avoid an embarrassing early exit.
Still frustrated by discrediting statements of European fans regarding the strengths of France’s Ligue 1, PSG aimed to buck the narrative in Europe. While maintaining an unbeaten domestic record for much of the campaign, PSG managed to advance past quality opponents in the UCL. Much of the season has felt like a revenge tour for Luis Enrique, the former Barcelona manager whose run as manager of the Spanish national team resulted in zero trophies.
A Champions League win would not only mean a lot to PSG, but also to the country. To date, only one French side has ever won the premier European trophy: Marseille in 1993 over AC Milan. Italian clubs face a similar drought: the country’s last Champions League victory was Mourinho’s Inter in 2010.
PSG is pushing for a massive supporter turnout in Munich. Asking for fans to arrive “by plane, care or even scooter,” PSG is looking to overwhelm Inter’s notorious Ultras group. And PSG is putting their money where their mouth is: all 600 club employees are being flown out with expenses paid to witness the historic event at Allianz Arena.
Inter Back in Final After 2023 Defeat to Man City
A thrilling 7-6 aggregate win over Barcelona in the UCL semifinals sees Inter back in the final after just one year off. This UCL final matchup is the first without a club from Spain, England or Germany since 2003-04, when Porto defeated Monaco. Largely the same squad from two years ago, one could argue the experience of Inter’s manager and players gave them the slight edge over Bayern and Barcelona, who both sport relatively young and inexperienced rosters.
For example, Barcelona were up 6-5 on aggregate with just a few minutes remaining in the second leg. But rather than looking to control possession and retain their lead, Flick’s Barca got greedy and pushed up the pitch, leading to a direct counter opportunity for Inter. After equalizing late, Inter scored in extra time and booked their ticket to Munich.
Inter will face battles on multiple fronts as the season comes to a close, however. The Scudetto still hangs in the balance as Napoli hold a slim one-point lead over Inter. That will force Inter to continue to play their best available squad and potentially risk fatigue or injury to key players. While the club is renowned for its teamwork, the roster is not as deep as PSG’s. And PSG will not have to sweat results in Ligue 1 too much after wrapping up the title weeks ago.
UCL Final Prediction: PSG vs Inter Betting Pick
It’s hard to believe this is the first-ever meeting between PSG and Inter. Both clubs have dominated their respective leagues for decades and have made deep runs in the Champions League. PSG most recently made the final in 2020, a loss to Bayern in Portugal’s capital. Inter were just in the final in 2023, a loss to treble winner Man City.
PSG’s path to the Champions League was much more rocky than Inter’s. The Parisians struggled in the league phase, only barely advancing to the knockout stages with 13 points. A favorable matchup with fellow French side Brest was a dominant 10-0 aggregate victory as Inter sat the matchweek with a bye. Brutal assignments against English clubs Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal were all brushed aside by Paris Saint-Germain on their route to the final.
Inter, however, met with representatives of three different countries. First, the defending Scudetto winners knocked out Feyenoord for prevailing over Bayern in a tough quarterfinal matchup. Their well-chronicled tie with Barcelona precedes their second final in three years. But how can we attack this from a betting perspective?
The last final to finish over 2.5 goals was 2018. Similar to betting trends we see in international tournaments, clubs get cagey under the bright lights and look to avoid mistakes. This leads to conservative tactics from sides we are more accustomed to seeing dominate in their respective leagues. With that being said, taking the under in this matchup is almost obligatory.
