Betting on the Champions League Group Stage
This is where the real business gets underway. The Group Stage of the Champions League features the very best teams in Europe. Some of them qualified directly to this stage, while others came through qualifying rounds to get here. All will be aiming to finish in the top two in their Group to qualify for the knock-out stages. There are eight Groups and there is a seeding system, but it is not possible to level ability perfectly across the Groups and some sections are clearly stronger than others.
Paris St-Germain v Juventus, 2022-09-06
Five wins and a draw and an impressive 24 goals scored, suggests that it is business as usual at PSG as they once again lead the way in Ligue 1. But all is not well in Paris. There are ongoing stories about a feud between Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, which according to some reports have resulted in the squad separating into French-speaking and Spanish-speaking factions. The falling out appears to have been sparked by a dispute over penalty-taking duties but is another manifestation of the ego-related problems that can occur when you pack your squad with superstars.
Despite their internal issues, PSG are still strong enough to blow most rivals out of the water and Juventus could be in for a rough night. They have made a solid start to the Serie A season, and have conceded only two goals in five games, but they head to Paris with several key players missing, including Paul Pogba, Federico Chiesa, Adrien Rabiot and Marley Ake, and look vulnerable.
Sevilla v Manchester City, 2022-09-06
Sevilla have been a significant presence in European football for several seasons now, although their success has come in the Europa League, but they could be heading into a transition period, signified by the departures of key defenders Jules Kounde and Diego Carlos. The result has been a dreadful start to the season, in which they’ve lost to Osasuna and Almeria as well as Barcelona.
The home team’s chances have been further hit by injuries to defenders Marcao and Karim Rekik, which is not the best preparation for taking on free-scoring Manchester City.
City dropped two points at the weekend when drawing with Aston Villa but they’ve still fired in 20 goals in six games, half of those coming from new signing Erling Haaland. It is tempting to play in the Over/Under market here, but betting on a City win looks a safer way to go.
RB Salzburg v Milan, 2022-09-06
The champions of Austria take on the champions of Italy on Tuesday and both teams will want to start strong in a tough-looking Group E that also includes Chelsea and Dinamo Zagreb.
Both teams are also in good form. Salzburg are on a five-game winning streak in the Austrian Bundesliga, while Milan are unbeaten in five, having also won the Milan derby, coming from behind to beat Inter 3-2, although they have also dropped points against Atalanta and Sassuolo.
The Austrian side are the clear underdogs here, but having made the breakthrough of reaching the Champions League knock-out stages last season, they are dangerous opponents to any team that underestimates them. Both teams have strong defences and caution could ultimately prevail here, so the draw looks the best pick.
Celtic v Real Madrid, 2022-09-06
On paper, this looks a one-sided contest, but the Spanish champions will not be taking this trip to Glasgow lightly. Celtic may be playing in one of Europe’s smaller leagues, but, along with Rangers, they have huge support and a full house at Celtic Park generates an intimidating atmosphere.
The home side are also in good form. They have a perfect record, winning all six games in the Premiership and have scored 13 in their last two fixtures, including a 4-0 victory over Rangers at this venue last weekend, which means morale could not be higher in the green half of Glasgow.
With Real also boasting a perfect record going into this game, we could be set for an entertaining game and it is certainly more unpredictable than the markets suggest. A Celtic win would not be a massive surprise, but the draw is a more realistic wager.
