New York Red Bulls have the edge over their city rivals and they are the better wager in the latest edition of the Hudson Derby.

NYCFC v New York Red Bulls, 2022-09-17
The Hudson River Derby is one of the keenest rivalries in MLS and with only four points to choose between these teams this clash looks like being a fierce one.
Reigning MLS Cup winners NYCFC are playing catchup here, trailing their city rivals by four points and not yet sure of their own playoff status. They are also completely out of form, picking up a solitary point from their last five MLS fixtures and go into this game having played Atlas of Mexico in the Campeones Cup in midweek, giving them little time to prepare.
By contrast, the Red Bulls are in a much more comfortable position. They’ve only lost one of their last six, and that defeat came against Conference leaders Philadelphia. With their playoff spot confirmed, a win here would virtually seal home advantage in the First Round and would restore some local pride after they lost 1-0 to these opponents back in July.
Atlanta United v Philadelphia, 2022-09-17
With three regular-season games to go and a two-point gap to close, Atlanta United have no margin for error in their playoff push. The fact that the four teams ahead of them have an extra game to play is a further complication and makes it all the more critical that the Five Stripes get a win here.
On paper, that would seem to be an extremely demanding task against the best team in the East. Philadelphia are seven points clear at the top of the Conference, but are not yet assured of a bye to the Conference semi-finals so still have a lot to play for in the regular season.
Atlanta will derive some hope from the fact that seven of their eight wins have come at home while all three of Philadelphia’s losses have been on the road. But the comparative form of the teams cannot be overlooked. Atlanta have won one of their last six and are two from ten in MLS. Union, meanwhile, have put up a five-game winning streak, with an aggregate score of 23-2. Anything other than a Philadelphia win here would be a significant surprise.
New England v Montreal, 2022-09-17
This time last season, New England had already clinched top spot in the Eastern Conference, but the 2022 campaign has been bitterly disappointing and should effectively end on Saturday.
Bruce Arena’s team have been presented with two opportunities to get back into playoff contention, against rival Eastern team New York Red Bulls and a poor Houston team, but have lost both of them and speaking after the game in Houston, Arena sounded pessimistic about their playoff chances.
There may be some hope that their opponents here may opt to rotate their starting team. Montreal have already sealed home advantage in the playoffs and are unlikely to overhaul Philadelphia for the top spot, so may already be looking ahead to bigger things. The problem for New England is that they are in no sort of form to take advantage of any Montreal complacency.
The Revs have won three from their last fifteen and their lack of consistency makes it hard for them to mount a serious last-gasp playoff challenge, so Montreal look like the best option here.
Austin v Nashville, 2022-09-17
Austin has already clinched a playoff spot and Nashville are in a strong position but both will be keen for victory in this game as they aim to finish the regular season strongly.
Nashville missed an opportunity to increase their lead over LA Galaxy in the Western Conference when they drew 1-1 last time but they are still six points clear although they have played one game more than many of their rivals. The fact that two of their last three games, including this one, are against the Conference’s top two teams is a slight complication, but they also have a game against lowly Houston and it would be a major surprise if they weren’t able to finish in the playoffs from here.
Their opponents are already certain of being in the playoffs but their form had been a concern. Going into their latest match against Real Salt Lake, they’d lost three in a row, including a 3-0 defeat in Nashville, but a win by the same scoreline against Salt Lake will have restored some confidence.
With both teams already looking ahead to the playoffs, this game could feature some squad rotation and maybe a cautious encounter as a result, so the draw looks the best betting option.
