Who do Bettors Favor?
Although there are several teams still in contention in Serie A, fans checking out the latest soccer betting markets will have noticed a gap developing between the top three and the rest. League leaders Napoli are the clear favorites, but there isn’t much to choose between them and both of the Milan clubs, with AC Milan edging out reigning Serie A champions Internazionale.
Serie A Title Betting
On November 20, Serie A leaders Napoli take on the reigning Italian champions Inter. This will be a fascinating test for the league leaders in two ways. First, it will give them an opportunity to secure a clear symbolic victory over last season’s best team. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, it gives them a chance to demonstrate that they can beat their main rivals.
Napoli’s strong start to the season has seen them win ten and draw two of their first twelve games, demonstrating the kind of consistency that previous Napoli teams have not been able to replicate. But so far they have played only two of their top-six rivals: beating Juventus and drawing with Roma. They are yet to play Inter, Lazio, or Atalanta, and for that reason, it probably pays to be cautious about betting on them at a short price in the Serie A Winners Outright market.
Instead, Milan look like a much stronger option. Stefano Pioli’s team is also unbeaten, and unlike Napoli, have faced four of their top-six rivals. And while both teams have been prolific in front of goal, Milan have the greater strength of depth in this department. There is not much to choose between them so right now, betting on Milan looks like the way to go.
Battle for the Serie A Top Four
With such a wide-open league, this season’s top four battle is shaping up to be a classic. Inter appear to be a cut above the rest of the chasing pack and look like solid contenders to at least finish third. But currently, the gap between Atalanta in fourth and Empolil in eleventh is just five points.
For Roma, Atalanta, Lazio, and Juventus, finishing in the top four is a minimum requirement and it is possible to make a case for all four. It might be tempting to consider longer odds options such as Sassuolo or Bologna, but with so many bigger spending rivals ahead of them they would have to perform a minor miracle to get into the top four.
Of the main contenders, Roma don’t seem a reliable proposition under Jose Mourinho. They have struggled to build any momentum this season and have won only one of their last five, while defeats to Lazio, Juventus, and Milan suggest they are not top four material at the moment.
Juventus have a strong squad and it is assumed that Massimiliano Allegri will get them heading in the right direction, but at the moment they are inconsistent, having already lost four times. At very short odds, they make no appeal at all in the Top Four betting markets.
Of the other two main contenders, Atalanta have slightly better form, and are top four regulars these days, but they are priced up to the hilt in the current market, so Lazio rate as a better option. It has taken time for Maurizio Sarri to embed his methods at the Rome club, but they are the third-highest scorers in Serie A, thanks partly to the league’s current top goalscorer Ciro Immobile, and if they can improve on the road – where all three of their defeats have come – they can secure a top-four place.
Serie A Relegation Betting
At the other end of the table, Cagliari already appear to be in trouble, having won only one of their opening 12 matches, while Salernitana, who have had a difficult season off the field so far, are also struggling. Both are odds-on for the drop, however, and there are other options.
Genoa have only won once so far this season and their nightmare startled the departure of Davide Ballardini, who has been replaced by Andriy Shevchenko. His arrival and the new ownership group may give Genoa the spark they need to find some form, but the fact remains that right now, they are low on confidence and the decision of the club to rest their fortunes on a number of veterans looks a poor one.
There is a long way to go but at this stage, Genoa look a touch overrated in the relegation market and could be a good bet in what looks like being a closely fought fight for survival.
