Sevilla v Cadiz, 2022-04-29
The opening game of this weekend’s round of fixtures is a potentially crucial fixture that could have an impact on the situation at both ends of the table.
Sevilla have had an excellent season and are still riding high in the top three, two points ahead of Atletico Madrid, and six points ahead of city rivals Real Betis, who are still chasing a top-four place. But although they are in a good position, Sevilla cannot afford to relax as three of their remaining five games are against top-eight sides who also have plenty to play for.
That should ensure that Julen Lopetegui’s team are fully motivated for this game against one of the division’s strugglers. Cadiz are only one point clear of the relegation zone, but they been picking up crucial wins in recent weeks, including a famous 1-0 success at Camp Nou. Sevilla cannot take their opponents lightly, but victory here could go a long way to securing a top four place and I expect Sevilla to get the job done in what may be a scrappy encounter.
Alaves v Villarreal, 2022-04-30
For Alaves, the situation is stark. Six points short of safety, La Liga’s bottom club will have no choice but to go for broke in this game and indeed in all of their remaining five fixtures. Five defeats in their last six does not suggest that they are poised for a revival, but they can take some confidence from their recent 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano, which kept their hopes of survival alive.
They may also be able to benefit from the fact that their opponents will be only three days on from a crucial Champions League semi-final first leg against Liverpool. Unai Emery’s side have plenty to play for domestically, but it has been a long season and asking his players to be at their very best in crucial games three days apart may be asking too much.
Real Madrid v Espanyol, 2022-04-30
Real Madrid were involved in an all-time classic Champions League game against Manchester City in midweek but they should find things a little easier on Saturday when they can confirm their 35th La Liga title against mid-table Espanyol.
Technically the Catalan side are not safe from relegation, but they have a healthy nine-point cushion and will have easier games than this one before the end of the season. Carlo Ancelotti will no doubt have to rotate his squad with next week’s second leg against Manchester City in mind, but Real have the resources to cope and can secure the title this weekend.
Athletic Bilbao v Atletico Madrid, 2022-04-30
Athletic Bilbao are still in the hunt for a European qualification place, while Atletico are battling to rescue a top-four finish from what has been a long hard struggle, so we could be in for fireworks when the two teams meet at San Mames on Saturday.
Apart from a shock 1-0 defeat in Mallorca, Atletico have been back to their best, at least defensively, in recent weeks, and have conceded only five goals in their last nine games in La Liga. At the same time, Bilbao have been struggling for fluency, recording only two wins from their last six. This could turn into a fairly scrappy, bad tempered occasion, in which goalmouth action will be at a premium, and the draw looks like the best bet here.
Getafe v Real Betis, 2022-05-02
Real Betis will be high on confidence after their Copa Del Rey success against Valencia, but this trip to Getafe will not be an easy fixture as they aim to get back into top four contention.
The home side are four points clear of relegation but will want to increase that margin to avoid a nervy end to the campaign and will be going all out for the points here. They may be at the wrong end of the table, but they are particularly hard to beat at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, where they have only lost one of their last eleven league games. That suggests this could be a tough task for Betis, and they may have to settle for the draw here.
