Slovakia Faces Kosovo in Critical World Cup Qualifying Semifinal

Kosovo attempts to achieve history this week as they take on Slovakia in the semifinal tie of World Cup qualification. The Kosovars have only operated a national team since 2016, but the small landlocked country is just two games away from their first-ever World Cup berth. Standing in their way is Slovakia, who themselves have not entered the prestigious tournament finals since 2010. Slovakia Hopeful of 1st World Cup Trip Since 2010

Slovakia made a strong showing in the first round of World Cup qualification. Drawn into a group with Germany, advancing directly into the World Cup via a first-placed finish was always going to be an uphill battle. But the Balkan side finished with 12 points through 6 matches, earning a playoff spot in the semifinals in Bratislava.

Now Francesco Calzona’s men must shake off a 6-0 defeat to Germany in their most recent outing. The loss was their worst in eight years and drew a clear line between Slovakia and the elites of Europe. A loss to Kosovo would be their first back-to-back competitive defeats since their 2022 Nations League campaign.

Slovakia has some talent they can turn to, especially with the injury crisis largely subsided. Napoli’s Stanislav Lobotka, Atlético Madrid’s Dávid Hancko and Fenerbahçe’s Milan Škriniar are all top-level playmakers who can help Slovakia out of their rut. The squad managed just six goals during qualifying, one less than 3rd-placed Northern Ireland.

Can Kosovo Shock the World?

Kosovo endured just one defeat across eight qualifying matches in the first round of the UEFA WC qualifiers. The Dardanians were perfect at home and managed away victories at Sweden and Slovenia to book their spot in the playoff. Only World Cup regular Switzerland collected more points in their group than Kosovo, who enter the second round full of confidence. Kosovo will even host the final against Turkiye or Romania should they advance past Slovakia.

Kosovo’s attack is propelled by the 23-year-old phenom Fisnak Asllani, a forward credited in part for the surprising success of 3rd-placed Bundesliga side Hoffenheim. Further ties to Germany include manager Franco Foda, who has overseen 12 wins through 19 contests so far with Kosovo. Elsewhere in Europe, Kosovan forward Vedat Muriqi has starred for Mallorca this year to great effect, along with his 32 career goals for his home country.

Kosovo has lost just once in 15 matches and should fancy their chances of getting over the hump if they can survive Slovakia in Bratislava. A matchup against Romania is certainly an outcome FIFA security will be hoping to avoid, given the geopolitical tensions between the two countries. Americans looking for a vested interest should be aware the winner of this path will join the USMNT’s group in the World Cup.

2026 FIFA World Cup Qualification – UEFA Betting Prediction

In most years, Slovakia would be massively favored at home against an inexperienced Kosovan team. But Kosovo has quickly emerged as a difficult out in Europe, and Slovakia is still reeling from a sputtering group stage filled with injuries. The line is closer than the public would expect, but that’s probably accurate. This lines up to be a testy affair with a lot on the line.

While I cannot pick a side, I do lean towards the under in this match. Like other UEFA WC qualifiers, the games grind to a near-halt when elimination is possible for both teams. Historically, unders have hit around 70% of the time in this phase of qualifying, going 39-17. Additionally, this is a single-leg format, a departure from the two-leg version of past editions, which only further addes to more conservative tactics.

The line has moved a ton since opening around (-125), but I still think there is some meat on the bone. Both teams have had months to prepare for this and for Kosovo it is arguably their biggest game ever. While I’d love to recommend a wager on under 2.5 as I have in other WC qualifying games this week, (-200) is a bit too steep, so I’ll go with the flat under two goals. This should be a cagey, low-event battle with either side sitting deep if they go up a goal.
