Soccer might be in the offseason overseas, but it’s in full force in the United States — not just with MLS but USL too. There are several USL games happening on July 22 and 23, which we have the best bets for. Read on for our expert betting advice!
Charleston Battery at Colorado Springs Switchbacks Betting Pick
No one should be surprised that the Switchbacks are overwhelming favorites over the Battery on the three-way moneyline. One team is one of the USL’s best, and the other is, welp, one of the worst. Here’s a look at the current betting odds for the Friday matchup (the only taking place this day) as set by major online sportsbooks:
|Colorado Springs Switchbacks||-285||-285|
Look, there’s zero betting value with Colorado’s moneyline. Unless you think this game ends in a draw or, more shockingly, a Charleston victory, you might as well bet on the game’s spread instead. The home-pitch Switchbacks are slotted at +110 to cover 1.5 goals scored.
We’ll be right up front and say no, Colorado isn’t winning by two goals or more. Why? That’s because this team is reeling. Yes, they’re second-overall in the Western Conference standings but just got dropped a game 3-0 on Monday to San Diego Loyal SC. But even worse, in the defeat, they had two players — Steven Echeverria and Aaron Wheeler — red-carded and are out for this matchup. Not only that, but several starters (goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell, Malik Johnson, Triston Hodge, and Matt Mahoney) are also listed as questionable with injuries.
As you can see, the Switchbacks won’t anywhere near their full capacity come game-time. And that’s just what the Battery needs to stay competitive cause this team is flat-out awful. Winners of only three matches, Charleston sit second-to-last in the Eastern Conference standings. The defense has been the squad’s biggest bugaboo as they’ve allowed 41 scores so far, second most in the conference.
If you’re feeling risky, maybe take the draw, given how empty-handed the Switchbacks will be. We do think they’ll still be able to squeeze out a one-goal victory but fail to cover the spread in the process.
Pittsburgh Riverhounds at Hartford Athletic Betting Pick
We’re onto Saturday’s slate of games, and there’s a bunch to bet on — 12 different ones to be exact. However, we’re eyeing this title between two Eastern Conference foes, Pittsburgh and Hartford. Up-to-date soccer betting lines have yet to be released as of this publish time, but the Riverhounds should be betting favorites as they’ve won six more games than Hartford has this season.
The big thing to look for in this matchup is whether Robbie Mertz will be in the lineup for Pittsburgh. He was recently reacquired from Atlanta United. Mertz previously played two seasons with Riverhounds and has excelled this year with a three-goal and six-assist output this season. He’s eligible to play this Saturday.
With Mertz in the lineup, Pittsburgh’s play-making offense is even better than it already was. The team now possesses three of the USL Championship’s top five players in assists. Team captain Kenardo Forbes is up to seven of his own, and forward Alex Dixon is at six too.
Riverhounds should be able to take care of business. We’d bet them on the regular moneyline only — not spread. Hartford has failed to win a single game this month, and even playing home, and it’s best to bet against them.
New York Red Bulls II at Monterey Bay F.C. Betting Pick
We couldn’t help ourselves by betting on New York-Monterey Bay — a meeting between two conference bottom feeders. That’s right; each team finds itself dead last in its respective conference. With a meager two wins, the Red Bulls are USL’s worst-performing team this season. Monterey Bay isn’t all that far behind, with five victories in 2022.
Rather than split hairs over who wins, we’d just bet on the game’s over/under in this one. It’s going to be a low-scoring game — anything else would shock us. New York has netted only ten goals in 19 games played this season. Throw in a cross-country road trip (losing three hours of timezone in the process), and they’ll likely be held scoreless. Monterrey Bay doesn’t have nearly the same amount of struggles but still isn’t that much better offensively. Either one goal is betting tallied this game or none as far as we see it. In either case, bet the under.
