San Diego FC has been the best story of the MLS season. The newest member of the league, San Diego FC elevated from the USL Championship. Now the club is on pace to win the Western Conference and maybe even the Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the best team in the MLS.
A comeback victory over San Jose on the road showed an unusual resolve from an expansion team. The chrome-and-azul outfit was outshot 18 to 5 but scored twice in the final 10 minutes to steal a victory. The win pushed San Diego to 4-0 against California-based clubs. It also marked their 6th straight away victory, already a record for an expansion side.
If San Diego tops the league-wide table, they would become the first expansion team to win the Supporters’ Shield in their debut season. A West-best 52 goals is to credit for the lion’s share of their points accrual. San Diego FC also has the best goal differential of all teams at (+19).

Back-to-back defeats have hindered their chances of a top-4 playoff spot however, relevant for home-field advantage in the first round of the MLS Cup Playoffs. Head coach Phil Neville has brought in new signing Matias Rojas to complete the playoff push. Rojas arrives from Argentine side River Plate after a stint with Inter Miami last year.
The Argentinian midfielder arrives as a potential replacement for Evander, the star Timber who finally departed after a drawn-out breakup. Evander was the heart and soul of Portland’s offense. Without him, Portland has seen long spells without scoring.
