Honduras (+162) vs. Panama (+200), Draw (+210)
Neither Honduras nor Panama got off to a flying start to the 2015 Gold Cup. Both sides could use a win tonight when they clash at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough (6:00 PM Eastern) in order to boost their chances of reaching the knockout stage.
With a strong Team USA (who also happen to be the tournament hosts) and a weak Haiti side rounding out Group A, Honduras and Panama are effectively fighting for second place in the quartet. Both could be in jeopardy of bowing out early if they don’t take the full three points tonight.
In their opening fixture, Honduras fell 2-1 to the Americans thanks to a brace by Clint Dempsey; Panama, meanwhile, suffered a disappointing 1-1 draw with Haiti, despite being ahead with just five minutes left on the clock. Panama manager Hernan Dario Gomez left the field furious with his team’s performance, especially on the defensive side.
“I’m really, really upset about this,” Gomez told the official CONCACAF website. “It’s a game Panama was winning. Panama had chances to go ahead. We had plenty of options to finish and put some space between us and them. … We commit[ted] some errors and, in the end, we let get away a result we had.”
Neither Panama nor Honduras showed their true colors in the first game of the tournament, but expecting a marked turnaround in play just two days later is a tall order. In the trends, the squads have drawn three of their last five matches, with the Panamanians winning the other two; however, beating a Pinto-coached squad is never easy as he almost always has his teams well-prepared on defense. Expect a draw.
Pick: Draw (+210).
