After being pushed back three weeks to give players adequate time to quarantine, the 2021 Australian Open will begin on Monday, February 8th.

Djokovic chasing greatness
After initially quibbling with the event’s quarantine demands, world No.1 Novak Djokovic (+125) is looking to add a record-extending ninth Australian Open men’s title and pull ever closer to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s record of 20 grand slam singles titles. The Djokovic odds to win the Australian Open look very favorable, with a high chance the Serbian will retain the title.
The 33-year-old Serbian is sitting at 17 career Grand Slams, but given he’s younger and in better health than his two rivals, should have a clear runway to the record if he can hoist his third-straight trophy at Rod Laver Arena.
The 39-year-old Federer is still on the mend from two knee injuries and won’t return to action until March while the 34-year-old Nadal (+550) just pulled out of an ATP Cup event with a sore back and hasn’t won an Australian Open since 2009.

World No. 3 Dominic Thiem (+500) captured his first grand slam title at the 2020 US Open, but the Austrian didn’t look on top of his game in his ATP Cup opener on Tuesday, suffering a 6-2 6-4 defeat to Italy’s Matteo Berrettini. Like Thiem, Daniil Medvedev (+550) has won three of his past four head-to-head matchups with Djokovic, so the big Russian could win his first major if his serve is working at full steam.

Naomi Osaka aims for 4th major
Where Djokovic has dominated the men’s draw over the past decade, there have been eight different Australian Open women’s champions since 2011. Naomi Osaka (+550) is one of the Australian Open 2021 favorites this year after winning the event in 2019 and reigning victorious in the 2020 US Open. Although, as it stands, she may still bow out early at the Australian Open. She extended her 12-match winning streak in a WTA tune-up on Tuesday, however, the 15-match winning streak of Aryna Sabalenka (+850) came to an end at the same event.
The young Belarusian had been red-hot, winning three straight titles, but she has yet to reach the quarterfinals of a major. World No.1 Ashleigh Barty (+850) will be playing her first competitive tennis in a year, which could give the native Australian an advantage given she won’t be required to quarantine like the other competitors.
