2025 WTA Cincinnati Picks: Can Sabalenka hold off the pack?

  • What: 2025 WTA Cincinnati
  • When: Aug 5-18, 2025
  • Time:  8:00-8 PM PST
  • Where: Cincinnati, Ohio

In contrast to the men’s field, the women’s Cincinnati Open boasts a wide range of potential champions.

Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka returns refreshed after a break following Wimbledon, while Iga Swiatek remains a strong contender despite a surprise loss to Clara Tauson in Montreal.

Elena Rybakina, Madison Keys, and Jessica Pegula are consistent threats, and both Naomi Osaka and Victoria Mboko have recently found their stride.

Aryna Sabalenka

World number one Aryna Sabalenka is eager to bounce back after falling short in her last three Grand Slam appearances, and she’ll be determined to defend her US Open title this year.

Her victory in Cincinnati in 2024 marked a major breakthrough, boosting her confidence heading into New York.

Recognized as a hard court specialist, Sabalenka is the player to beat at the top of the draw and rightfully enters the tournament as the favorite.

Sabalenka excels on hard courts, reaching the finals of the last five Grand Slam events on this surface and winning the Cincinnati Open last year. She has consistently advanced to the semifinals or better at WTA 1000 and Grand Slam tournaments.

Sabalenka will face Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals, and may see Iga Swiatek or Amanda Anisimova in the semifinals.

Her powerful baseline game fits these fast courts well, reinforcing her status as the favorite with oddsmakers. I would bet on Sabalenka to repeat at +225 odds.

Iga Swiatek

Fresh off her breakthrough Wimbledon victory, Swiatek appears to have overcome the nerves that once held her back on surfaces other than clay.

While Cincinnati’s quicker courts aren’t her ideal setting, her newfound confidence and momentum make her a formidable contender.

Swiatek struggled through much of 2025 but broke through by winning her sixth Grand Slam at Wimbledon, proving she can excel on faster surfaces even though she’s most comfortable on clay.

Despite this major victory, she’s coming off a Round of 16 exit to Clara Tauson at the Canadian Open.

Now, as the No. 3 seed in Cincinnati, Swiatek faces a challenging path: she is likely to meet Marta Kostyuk in the third round, while either Diana Shnaider or rising star Victoria Mboko could await in the Round of 16.

Additionally, Amanda Anisimova—who suffered a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Swiatek in the Wimbledon final—could be a quarterfinal opponent, posing a significant mental challenge for the American.

Swiatek is a solid bet at +275 and I expect her to get to the final to face off against Sabalenka.

Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff will have the crowd behind her, despite a noticeable dip in form since her French Open triumph in June.

Gauff claimed the Cincinnati title in 2023 and thrives on fast hard courts, making her an intriguing contender at +550.

Since her French Open victory, Gauff has struggled to regain her form, having difficulty adjusting to faster courts and battling serve inconsistencies. In fact, the No. 2 seed is just 2-3 since her Roland Garros win.

This is a notable contrast to last year, when Gauff captured the Cincinnati title during the best hard-court stretch of her career and then went on to win the U.S. Open. However, she hasn’t reached that level lately.

To make matters more challenging, she could face Dayana Yastremska—who recently upset her at Wimbledon—in the third round. Furthermore, possible quarterfinal opponents include Jasmine Paolini, Elina Svitolina, or Naomi Osaka.

I don’t like Gauff’s chances in Cincinnati and would pass on her odds at this price.

Elena Rybakina

Rybakina is capable of competing with the best in the game, but she has struggled to maintain her top form over extended periods due to health issues.

Even so, she’s been playing well in Canada, and her powerful serve and groundstrokes should be well-suited to Cincinnati’s fast hard courts.

That said, as the No. 9 seed, she faces a tougher draw—potentially meeting Madison Keys in the Round of 16 and Sabalenka in the final.

Rybakina is another one, who is impressive but I just don’t see her winning it all, so she would be another one that I’d have to pass on.
