Alexander Zverev Favored to Reach Miami Open Semifinal Over Francisco Cerundolo

Alexander Zverev and Francisco Cerundolo meet for the seventh time this Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open. It hasn’t been easy for Sascha in Miami, with some tough tiebreakers and a set loss to Marin Cilic. Cerundolo shocked Medvedev and made light work of Ugo Humbert to seal his place in the final eight. Can Alexander Zverev Handle Miami Humidity?

The second leg of the “Sunshine Double” sees the best of the best meet in Miami Gardens for one of the more prestigious Masters 1000 tournaments. Alexander Zverev arrives in Florida this year still not having yet won a Miami Open tournament, although he did reach the semifinals two years ago. His career record on the grounds is 21-6, with a best finish of runners-up back in 2021.

It’s been a decent start to the new calendar year for Zverev. Sascha advanced to the semifinals of the Australian Open, losing to Carlos Alcaraz, before winning the Mexican Open in the men’s doubles format. Then came the Indian Wells Masters, where Zverev was again ousted in the penultimate round, this time by Jannik Sinner. It’s clear Zverev is one of the best in the world but a clear level below Sinner and Alcaraz, who have dominated recent tournaments.

The biggest struggle for Zverev heading into this matchup with Francisco Cerundolo will be the conditions. While Zverev loves to force his opponents into long rallies, the humidity will slow ball movement in the air and make clean winners more rare. That dynamic benefits the underdog more, given the ability to stay alive in points. It doesn’t help that Cerundolo is just as comfortable stretching rallies.

Francisco Cerundolo: First Medvedev, Now Zverev?

Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo thrives in Miami. Not only is he buoyed by raucous South American fans in attendance, but the humidity does not seem to faze him. Cerundolo is 15-5 all-time at the Miami Masters, a strong record for any top-20 player. If you blindly backed Cerundolo in Miami since his first match, you would be up 26 units for a whopping 137% ROI. In 2026 alone, you would be up 4 units (assuming flat 1-unit staking).

Cerundolo shocked tennis fans in a thrilling Round of 32 defeat of Daniil Medvedev, but it was the way in which he did so that really stood out. Cerundolo bageled the Russian with a 6-0 first set victory, setting the tone for his ultimate triumph. That should calm the nerves a bit before he takes on a top-5 player like Zverev, or at the very least give him some confidence.

Cerundolo is playing some of his best tennis now, seemingly peaking as he nears his athletic prime at 27 years old. He will need to attack Zverev’s second serve relentlessly if he hopes to have any chance of staying alive in Miami. With a career record of 3-3 against Sascha, he will believe he can get the job done. However, there is one caveat: Zverev has won the last 3 matches against Cerundolo, all without dropping a set. In fact, Cerundolo won the first 3 all on clay.

Zverev vs Cerundolo Prediction: Free Expert Miami Open Betting Pick

What will ultimately separate these two is how they respond to the conditions. Both will look to wear down their opponents with extended rallies and strong baseline defense. Thankfully for the two competitors, they are spared from the Miami sun as this match is scheduled for 7 pm Eastern. However, the humidity will still be very high.

It’s hard to pick a side in the betting market here. I anticipate a back-and-forth affair that could easily go very long. If Cerundolo can punish Zverev’s second serves, he stands a chance, but he rarely seems to show up against top-5 players. It doesn’t help that this game is on hardcourt, Zverev’s preferred surface and not Cerundolo’s. That analysis leads me towards a bet on the over.

In front of a pro-Argentine crowd and after just knocking out Medvedev, I envisage Cerundolo holding his own in the first set and not giving up later in the match. This is one of the biggest moments of Cerundolo’s career and I don’t see him giving this one up without a fight. Let’s take over 22.5 games in what should be a fun tennis match between baseline specialists.
