Alcaraz began the year ranked a modest No. 32, and shot up all the way to No. 1. Oh, and did we mention he did this while being only 19 years old? The feat has made him the youngest player to ever reach the world’s number-one spot among men.
How did Alcaraz do this? Welp, no surprise, he won and won a lot at that. The young phenom claimed five different titles, but none more important than the U.S. Open. It was after that maiden Grand Slam that Alcaraz ascended into the No. 1 ranking. His final record during the year was a whopping 57-13. Not bad for a guy who became a pro in 2020.
Unfortunately, Alcaraz didn’t end on a high note. He lost his first game after becoming No. 1 when he dropped two straight sets to David Goffin at Astana. Then more recently, he suffered an injury to his stomach. The injury cut his 2022 campaign short, shelving him for six weeks. Alcaraz says he’s preparing for 2023 and so are we with our betting picks underneath.

There are so many variables that come into play with this bet. For instance, we have zero way of knowing whether Alcaraz will suffer another injury next year — or heck, whether his competition will. But let’s just pretend none of that happens. Sure, that’s not 100 percent realistic, but it’s easier to draw conclusions from that.
In that scenario, Alcaraz will have stiff competition for supremacy over the sport — Novak Djokovic Daniil Medvedev, Rafael Nadal, and Alexander Zverev being chief among them. All four of the aforementioned players had their 2022 seasons greatly affected by injuries and external bans (vaccine, Russian affiliations, etc.) We’ll be honest here and say Alcaraz hasn’t proved himself more capable than the likes of Djokovic and Nadal when the two legends are at full strength. That time will likely come, but we’re not sure that it’s in 2023.
For this reason, we can’t picture Alcaraz winning more than one Grand Slam. In a best-case scenario, he takes a single one and that’s it. His best chance at winning is in a hardcourt event such as the Australian Open or US Open. So we’ll play this conservative and bet one Grand Slam victory next year for Alcaraz.

He’s another fun bet on whether or not Alcaraz will end 2023 still ranked No. 1. The keyword being end. This bet isn’t on whether he gives up the top ranking at any point next year. He can do so and still cash this bet so long as he’s in the top spot again by December 1, 2023.
It might take more than one Grand Slam title to keep Alcaraz atop. We say that because Djokovic and Nadal would be strong favorites to win one themselves. Djokovic dominates the Australian Open, while the French Open belongs to Nadal. If one of the two can win another Grand Slam, which is very realistic, then Alcaraz’s world ranking could be in jeopardy.
This leads us to bet that no, Alcaraz won’t end 2023 as the world’s best-ranked player. As we’ve alluded to, the competition is too fierce and Alcaraz still has some proving to do at his ripe age.
