Swiatek is back in full swing

Since assuming Ash Barty’s world No. 1 ranking following the Australian’s retirement, Iga Swiatek (+185) has looked every bit the part as planet earth’s best female tennis player. The 20-year-old is 31-3 on the season with four tournament wins.

If there’s any potential concern, it’s that Swiatek withdrew from Madrid and missed the first clay-court tune-up of the year. However, if the 2020 French Open champion claims her second-straight title in Rome, her resume will be unassailable rolling into Roland-Garros.

Will they play in Paris?

Naomi Osaka (+2000) withdrew from this week’s Italian Open with an Achilles injury but is expected back for the second Grand Slam of the season. While the four-time major winner made the Miami Open final last month, she has never reached a clay-court event final.

Serena Williams (+3300) has been sidelined since last year’s Wimbledon and will not be in attendance at Roland-Garros, where she has won three times in her career.

Other contenders at Roland-Garros

Simona Halep (+600) is back in business after missing both Roland Garros and Wimbledon last year with a calf injury. The 2018 French Open Champion won her 23rd-career WTA title at the Melbourne Summer Set before semifinal appearances at Dubai and Indian Wells and a quarter-final showing in Madrid.

Paula Badosa (+1200) has jumped from 70th in the world to No. 3 in the past year with a victory at Indian Wells last October. The American-born Spaniard was thumped by Halep in the Round of 32 in Madrid but says clay is her favorite surface.

Barbora Krejcikova (+1400) came out of nowhere last year to become the third unseeded women’s French Open champion since 2017. Don’t expect the Czech to replicate her success in 2022 though – she has missed the entire clay-court season with an arm injury and could very well pull out of Paris.

Best Longshot

Coco Gauff (+2500) is bound to breakthrough sooner or later. The 18-year-old American made an impressive run to the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros in 2021. And, after cracking the top 15 for the first time last month, she gave Halep a tough match (4-6, 4-6) in the Round of 16 in Madrid.
