  • Odds: Gennady Golovkin (-3000) vs. Kamil Szeremeta  (+1100) via Bovada
  • Prediction: Golovkin (knockout)

IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin meets mandatory title challenger Kamil Szeremeta on December 18 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

Golovkin has not stepped into the ring since he scored a unanimous decision win over Sergiy Derevyanchenko on October 5, 2019. The win earned Golovkin the IBF and IBO middleweight titles. Both titles were vacant.

A Golovkin win over Szeremeta could set up a trilogy bout against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Alvarez, who has the only win over the 40-1-1 Golovkin, also fought him to a draw. Alvarez faces Callum Smith on December 19.

The 31-year-old Szeremeta is undefeated. He sports a perfect 21-0 record. Szeremeta’s most recent fight also came on October 5, 2019, when he scored a second-round TKO over Oscar Cortes. This is the biggest fight of Szeremeta’s career.

GOLOVKIN vs SZEREMETA PREDICTION & PICK

A glance at the odds of this fight should make it pretty clear which fighter is expected to dominate the bout. Golovkin, who is the former WBA, IBO, WBC, IBF and The Ring middleweight champion, regained the IBF and IBO titles in his hard-fought matchup against Derevyanchenko. Golovkin has fought twice since his loss to Alvarez. He won both contests. Expect GGG to look for and get the knockout in this matchup.

Prediction: Golovkin at -2500 at SportsBetting.

BETTING VALUE WITH GOLOVKIN

If you’ve read about this fight before, it would be easy to assume Golovkin is looking past Szeremeta and focusing on a trilogy fight with Alvarez. While the Alvarez matchup might be on Golovkin’s mind, I don’t think he’s looking past his next opponent.

What I do think is that Golovkin is going to focus on getting through this fight as quickly as he can so he can be healthy for a training camp for Alvarez – if that fight gets booked.

With that, I think we’ll see a classic version of GGG. I expect Golovkin to add a 36th knockout victory to his record.

Pick: Golovkin via knockout at -2000 at Bookmaker.

WHO HAS THE EDGE?

Golovkin has been fighting top-level competition for years. He won the WBA title in 2010, the IBO title in 2011, the WBC (interim) title in 2015, and the IBF title in 2015. He retained those titles until his loss to Alvarez in 2018. During that entire time, Golovkin had a target on his back. He knows what pressure is and he knows how it feels to fight with a spotlight on him. Szeremeta has never faced that kind of pressure or those expectations. There’s not a single element of this fight, except maybe for age, that does not favor GGG, who is 38.

WHAT’S AT STAKE

For GGG, the stakes are a chance to win his titles back from Alvarez and a huge payday for that potential matchup. As for Szeremeta, he has the potential to become a kind of folk hero because the odds are so stacked against him in this scrap.
