The next UFC pay-per-view fight card on the schedule is UFC 316, which takes place on Saturday, June 7, from Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The main event of the ESPN+ streaming PPV card is a rematch between current UFC bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili and the man he took the title from, Sean O’Malley. Before that bout, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Julianna Pena puts her title on the line against former PFL featherweight champ Kayla Harrison. Also on the 316 PPV card is a middleweight matchup between Kelvin Gastelum and Joe Pyfer.
Kelvin Gastelum (19-9-0-1) is a former interim middleweight title challenger. Gastelum is 3-4 since 2020 and coming off a June 2024 decision victory over Daniel Rodriguez.
Joe Pyfer (13-3) joined the UFC in 2022. He is 4-1 with the UFC, losing by decision to Jack Hermansson, but bouncing back from that setback with a knockout over Marc-André Barriault in his most recent outing in June 2024.

UFC 316: Kelvin Gastelum betting breakdown
The 33-year-old Kelvin Gastelum has been with the UFC since he won Season 17 of The Ultimate Fighter in 2013. Gastelum has had some ups and downs during his UFC career. The high-point was his UFC Hall of Fame interim title fight opposite Israel Adesanya in April 2019. Since losing to Adesanya by decision in that five-round affair, Gastelum has competed eight times, putting together a record of 3-5. Gastelum has not won back-to-back fights since 2017-18.
Gastelum has always been an incredibly talented competitor with world championship potential. The problem when it comes to this UFC veteran is you never know what version of Gastelum will show up inside the Octagon on fight night. Gastelum has NCAA Division I wrestling chops to go along with one of the strongest chins in the UFC; he has never been knocked out, and only three UFC opponents have ever knocked him down. The former interim title challenger can do everything well, but his work ethic is questionable.
Gastelum looked good against Rodriguez, picking up four takedowns on his way to a decision win. If he can establish wrestling and ground control and test Pyfer’s cardio, Gastelum has a shot in New Jersey.
Gastelum lands an average of 3.74 significant strikes per minute with a success rate of 42 percent. His striking defense is 57 percent, and he gets hit 3.48 times per minute. Gastelum lands an average of 1.10 takedowns per 15 minutes with a success rate of 34 percent. His takedown defense is 59 percent.
UFC 316: Joe Pyfer betting breakdown
Joe Pyfer and Gastelum were booked for the recent UFC Mexico event, but Pyfer was forced from that event on fight day because of illness. The UFC rebooked the contest for New Jersey, which is much closer to Pyfer’s home base of Philadelphia.
The UFC was very high on Pyfer until his loss to Hermansson in 2024. That main event contest was supposed to be Pyfer’s time to shine. However, his vaunted striking fell short as he connected on only 36 percent of his significant strike attempts while only landing four strikes and spending 3:01 under Hermansson’s control in the fifth round of that bout. Pyfer should have learned a lesson in that outing: high-level experience counts in the UFC, and he will face an opponent who has a lot of that experience in Gastelum at UFC 316.
Pyfer uses power and pressure to overwhelm his opponents. In this matchup, he needs to be careful he doesn’t gas out against Gastelum, who has never been knocked out. Pyfer’s path to victory is pressure, volume, and selective power. He cannot overthrow his strikes and hunt for the knockout against a tough foe like Gastelum.
Pyfer lands an average of 3.72 significant strikes per minute with a success rate of 41 percent. His striking defense is 51 percent and he gets hit 3.48 times per minute. Pyfer lands an average of 1.45 takedowns per 15 minutes with a success rate of 41 percent. His takedown defense is 50 percent.
Best Bets: UFC 316: Kelvin Gastelum vs. Joe Pyfer
Joe Pyfer has the tools to beat Kelvin Gastelum if he does not overextend himself. The betting pick is for Pyfer to beat Gastelum by decision. However, the betting odds are so lopsided that a value bet for Gastelum to pick up an upset decision win needs to be considered.
