The next UFC pay-per-view fight card on the schedule is UFC 316, which takes place on Saturday, June 7, from Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The main event of the ESPN+ streaming PPV card is a rematch between current UFC bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili and the man he took the title from, Sean O’Malley. Before that bout, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Julianna Pena puts her title on the line against former PFL featherweight champ Kayla Harrison. We look at the betting odds, picks, and predictions for the UFC 316 co-main event.

Julianna Pena (13-5) is in her second run with the UFC women’s bantamweight belt. She is coming off a win over Raquel Pennington at UFC 307 in October to begin her second stint as UFC champ. She won the title in 2021 with a submission of Amanda Nunes, but lost the title back to Nunes via decision in their 2022 rematch.

Kayla Harrison (18-1) is the No. 2 ranked UFC women’s bantamweight. Harrison made her UFC debut in April 2024 with a submission win over former champ Holly Holm. She is coming off an October unanimous decision win over Ketlan Vieira.

UFC 316 Co-Main Event: Julianna Pena betting breakdown

Julianna Pena shocked the MMA world at UFC 269 when she overcame steep betting odds to end Amanda Nunes’ run as UFC women’s bantamweight champion. Nunes was listed as the -1000 betting favorite on fight night, while Pena was the +650 betting underdog. Pena used her jab to keep Nunes at distance and then scored with combinations. For some reason, Nunes opted to exchange with Pena during that contest. That decision left Nunes fatigued, which set up the opportunity for Pena to pick up the submission win.

The rematch saw Nunes come in as the -255 favorite over the +215 champ. That fight played out much differently, with Nunes not allowing Pena to establish her striking and pressure. With that, Nunes cruised to a decision win, regained her title, and then promptly retired from the sport, leaving the UFC women’s bantamweight title vacant. Pena regained the belt with a split decision win over Pennington, using her takedowns, ground control, and subs to squeak by with a split decision.

Pena is a well-rounded fighter who employs a lot of pressure, but her striking is not very technical. She throws her power strikes with some recklessness, which leaves her open for someone like Harrison to get in close and move the fight to the fence, where she can then work her opponent to the mat.

Pena lands 3.25 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy of 44 percent. Her striking defense is 57 percent, and she gets hit 2.53 times per minute. The ex-champ lands 1.81 takedowns per 15 minutes with an accuracy of 55 percent. Pena’s takedown defense is 23 percent.

UFC 316 Co-Main Event: Kayla Harrison betting breakdown

A two-time Olympic gold medal winner in judo, Kayla Harrison has shed the grappler-only tag that sometimes follows fighters with a similar background to hers, picking up six knockout wins during her career. Harrison has also displayed a willingness to fight outside of her comfort zone, showing that she has stand-up striking and ground striking abilities to go with her mat skills.

Harrison does not have a great striking game on the feet. What she does have is strength, power and takedown skills, which are enough. Harrison’s ability to keep the fight on the mat and do damage on the ground is stellar.

Two numbers that stand out ahead of the Pena vs. Harrison matchup are Amanda Nunes going six-for-eight in takedowns against Pena and Pena’s 23 percent takedown defense. Those stats indicate that Harrison will have a route to victory fighting to her strengths, which will exploit the weaknesses of Pena.

The one worry about this fight is Harrison’s weight cut. She has struggled to hit the bantamweight limit, so it’s worth watching what Harrison looks like on the scale.

Harrison lands 4.87 significant strikes per minute with a striking accuracy of 64 percent. Her striking defense stands at 64 percent and she absorbs 1.19 strikes per minute. Harrison averages 2.75 takedowns per 15 minutes with a success rate of 30 percent. Her takedown defense is a perfect 100 percent.
