Life really is good for fans of Maryland sports betting. Ever since things were legalized, people had been racing to get their bets in. Now, though, mobile sports betting options have been live since late November and it has helped the state put up impressive numbers overall. So, how good were things to start the new year? Well, sports betting numbers in Maryland were massive in January, which is of course amazing to see.
According to a report, more than $400 million was posted in total bets. While the official numbers for the state’s revenue haven’t been published yet, that $400 million number is turning a lot of heads and it most definitely showcases just how popular betting is across the board. In January, there’s no question that a lot of people were checking out the NFL betting odds and getting in their wagers.
The same was the case in December, as the betting numbers also topped $400 million, which is of course amazing to see. With the start of the NBA season earlier in the fall too, it only has led to more and more people taking advantage of the new betting regulations and putting their money down. When it comes to Maryland, there’s plenty of sports betting interest across the year, no doubt about that.
During football season, people in the state have strong interest in the NFL and the Washington Commanders. While it was a bit of a down year for Ron Rivera’s team, that doesn’t mean that people weren’t betting on the Commanders left and right. The bits were always high for some massive NFC East showdowns – people love when Washington takes on Dallas, Philadelphia or New York. As good as January was, you better believe that strong numbers will also be on the way in the coming months.
The US recorded $93.2bn in legal sports betting handle in 2022, a new single-year record, bolstered by online sports betting launches in New York, Kansas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Maryland, per @AmericanGaming. This generated $7.5bn in sportsbook revenue.

More mobile betting options are now available for Maryland sports fans
In even better news for people across the state, more mobile betting options are now available for Maryland sports fans. As things stand, there are now eight total live sportsbooks that offer up online betting options for folks. That’s a great start, as mobile betting options have only been on the table for around three months. With that said, more and more companies are looking to launch in Maryland.
All of the different online options have no question played a major role in the betting numbers increasing. There’s a big difference for people having to get in their cars and drive to an in-person sportsbook than having the ability to just place their wagers from wherever they are on the go. You can place an online bet from home, at the store, camping and way, way more. The ease and convenience has been a welcome addition for people in Maryland.
With all of that said, there’s less than 10 active online sportsbooks currently in operation. However, that number is expected to grow over the next year, which is only going to result in more people gaining betting interest. That’s always great to see and the revenue numbers are sure to be high as well. At the end of the day, it really feels like Maryland is seeing a lot of progress with this project overall.
The returns have been great to see, especially when you consider the fact that from a size standpoint, Maryland is quite smaller compared to other places across the country. Not only that, but massive states like Texas, California and Florida are yet to legalize betting. As for Maryland, they not only legalized sports betting, but also introduced mobile betting options. That’s a win-win for everyone involved.
Super Bowl numbers were also strong for Maryland
As you might have been able to guess, despite the event taking place in February, the Super Bowl numbers were also strong for Maryland. Matter of fact, people across the USA didn’t hesitate in checking the Super Bowl betting odds and putting some serious money down. The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles treated people to one of the best Super Bowls in years, with KC coming out on top.
Patrick Mahomes, who also took home AP NFL MVP honors, was named the Super Bowl MVP after recording such a strong showing. Jalen Hurts can’t be forgotten about here either, as he was brilliant for the Eagles in a losing effort. What makes the Super Bowl so great is that you can bet on just about everything. The prop bets are limitless and we see a lot of people check those odds leading up to the game.
Looking ahead for what’s next for Maryland sports betting, people are of course going to be focused on the rest of the NBA season, plus the postseason. With players heading to Spring Training as well, you know that the MLB bets are also going to be high. Things just keep getting better for sports betting fans in Maryland. It’s an exciting time for so many different people involved in things.
