Last taking place back in 2018, the 2022 FIVB Volleyball World Championship is the Super Bowl of men’s volleyball. Contested by men’s national teams from the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball or FIVB, the world championship will take place following the summer of this year. In the 2018 edition of the tournament, Poland defended their world title, defeating the reigning Olympic champions, Brazil, in straight sets in a rematch of the 2014 FIVB final.
For this year’s championship, the MTS crew takes a closer look at who the main contenders are for the world championship and how the event might shake out.

The Number One Contender: Brazil (Odds: TBA)
Ranked as the best team in the world according to the most recent FIVB world rankings, the Brazilians are seeking their first world championship since 2010. Thanks to its success under legendary head coach Bernardo Rezende, the Brazilians are often thought as the preeminent squad in men’s volleyball. Brazil has won the World Championship three different times, in addition to three gold medals at the Olympic Games, and nine World League gold medal finishes. In 2021, Brazil continued its winning ways with first place finishes at the Nations League (Rimini) and the South American Championship (Brasília).
Number Two: Poland (Odds: TBA)
The reigning World Champions since 2014, Poland has served as the historic No. 2 to Brazil since the turn of the 21st century. Ranked as the second best squad in the FIVB world rankings, Poland will be seeking a third consecutive world championship in 2022, their fourth overall. Poland had a solid 2021 with a second place finish at the Nations League and a bronze medal performance at the European Championship. Under head coach Vital Heynen, the Polish squad has had their best performances come at the World Championships. They should never be overlooked on the biggest stage.
Number three: Russia (Odds: TBA)
One of the most dominant squads on the international circuit, Russia currently sits as the third best team in the FIVB world rankings. While the Russians have not won a world title since 1982, they have held their own as a historic and consistent contender to the crown. An extremely accomplished national squad, they have won six world championships, three Olympic Gold Medals (the most recent coming in 2012), and six World Cups. The Russians almost were able to lock down their fourth Olympic Gold Medal in Tokyo but instead settled for a silver medal finish. Perhaps this could be the World Championship they finally break through and bring a title back to Mother Russia.
Final contender: France (Odds: TBA)
The 2020 Summer Olympics champions, France is perhaps the hottest hand leading into the world championship later this year. Their first-ever Olympic title, the French would also be seeking their first-ever World Championship later this year. While the other squads on this list have numerous trophy cases filled with titles, France has a more modest history of success on the international level. They won the European Championship in 2015, but have never quite found a consistent rhythm to international titles. Maybe this could be the year to break out from this pattern, but it will be a difficult task to win at the Olympics and World Championships in back-to-back years.
Prediction: In what could be one of the most action-packed finals in some time, look for Brazil to take back their crown in 2022. The Brazilians are just too consistent of a power for the gold medal to elude them for this long.
