The 2022 Men’s Volleyball Nations League quarterfinals get started on Wednesday, July 20th with a pair of huge matches on the schedule. In the first, the United States will take on Brazil in what should be a thrilling encounter. After that, Italy will face The Netherlands. Keep reading for the Men’s Nations League Volleyball Picks.

The United States comes into this match as a slight favorite because they’re in very good shape at the moment. The Americans closed out the preliminaries in the best possible way, winning four in a row and most recently beating Argentina three sets to two on July 10th. Outside hitter Defalco Torey dominated, finishing with 28 block assists, 25 attack points, and three block points. It was truly a back and forth match but the US managed to win the final set 17-15 in what was an absolute nailbiter. They finished in third place in the prelims with a 10-2 record as well. Their two losses came against Iran and Poland, with the latter securing second spot. The States also took down Canada, Germany, and France before the Argentina victory. The squad has yet to win the Nations League but has captured a silver and bronze. They did finish in seventh place in the 2021 edition, though.
Brazil meanwhile just made it through to the quarterfinals after finishing in sixth in the opening round, going 8-4 in 12 matches. Six of their wins were in straight sets, however, which essentially means when they’re on, it’s dangerous for the opposition. The Brazilians took down Japan in their most recent match after bouncing back from a defeat to France. Brazil beat the Japanese in straight sets in Osaka, with Ferreira Souza Darlan leading the way offensively. Brazil actually won six of their final seven matches ahead of this quarterfinal but they did lose to the US already earlier in the tournament.
The Americans certainly have the upper hand, having already tasted victory against Brazil in the Nations League. I personally think they’ll ride the momentum and beat the 2021 champions again and book their ticket in the semifinals.

The Italians are a massive -1800 favorite here against the Netherlands and for good reason. They posted a stellar 10-2 record to top the group in the preliminaries, winning 32 sets and dropping just nine. Italy won six straight to close out the opening round, including victories over Iran, Serbia, and their opponent on Wednesday, The Netherlands. They ran riot on the Dutch in a three-set win, outscoring them 73-57 overall. Lavia Danielle had 15 points on his own, while Zaytsev Ivan also compiled 11. Despite playing so great this time around, the Italians have actually yet to medal in the Nations League. In 2018 and 19′ they finished in eighth place and then in 10th spot last year. But, Italy is now considered one of the favorites to win it all and is certainly in good shape to at least get to the semis here.
The Dutch have a very tall task ahead against a team that just wiped the floor with them. Holland was no match for Italy last week but they’ll be hoping for a different outcome this time around. The Netherlands does have the best offensive weapon in the tournament so far in Nimir Abdel-Aziz, who leads the Nations League with 231 total points and 191 attack points. But, his team hasn’t played too well so far, securing the last berth in the final round with an eighth-place finish, going 6-6. One of the big reasons they’re such a heavy underdog here is because the Dutch lost their final three matches, only winning a single set in the process. The Italians are definitely the superior group, but anything is possible at this stage. This is only Holland’s second time in the Nations League, finishing in 14th place in the 2021 edition.
I truly have no doubts Italy will come out victorious on Wednesday, but the moneyline offers practically zero value. I’m going to give the Dutch an array of hope here and say they’ll win a single set. Take the Italians to win in four sets at +210 odds. It’s worth a bet.
