Sky vs. Liberty Betting Preview

Chicago truly let the series opener slip out of their fingertips thanks to a late run from the Liberty. But, Candace Parker and Co. weren’t going to let that happen on Saturday. They didn’t even allow New York to get even close to them. The Sky came out of the gates on fire, outscoring Sabrina Ionescu’s group 31-10 in the first quarter, and never let their foot off the gas pedal. In every aspect imaginable, the Sky ran riot on the Liberty.

James Wade’s team outrebounded NY 45-28 and bodied them inside offensively to the tune of 60 points in the paint to just 24 for the Liberty. They also fully capitalized off their opponents’ sloppy play, translating 19 turnovers into 25 points. Chicago was lethal in transition, too, scoring 25 fast-break points. Everyone got in on the action, with five different scorers finishing in double-digits. Kahleah Copper led the way on both ends of the floor, pouring in 20 points and notching three steals. Parker, meanwhile, posted a double-double of 12 points and 12 boards. The Sky never trailed in this game, leading by as many as 42 at one point. The confidence will be high on Tuesday, but they know the Liberty is going to be coming back with a vengeance.

New York basically didn’t even show up on Game 2. It’s that simple. Yes, the Sky is clearly the more superior bunch, but the Liberty basically just rolled over and collapsed. Far too many turnovers, no assertion down low, and it also doesn’t help they shot an atrocious 33% from the field and just 15% from three-point land. Their highest scorers were Xu Han and Michaela Onyenwere off the bench with 10 points apiece. Ionescu, easily their best player, really struggled to get going. She posted just seven points and only took a total of five shots. The Sky made it their mission to shut her down, and it happened.

The only way the Liberty pull off the upset here is if Ionescu balls out. She is the focal point of this offense. The 24-year-old must be more aggressive against Chicago, one of the best defensive clubs in the WNBA. She obviously needs help, but Ionescu can set the tone for the rest of the squad with a strong start. New York also has to make its presence felt on the boards. Losing the rebound battle is absolutely crucial to the outcome. The ball movement was poor on Saturday, too, registering just 15 assists. Moving the rock around and finding good looks is key. Hopefully, they can do so on Tuesday.

Sky vs. Liberty Picks

To be honest, I really don’t see the Liberty standing a chance here. The Sky made a loud statement on the weekend and proved they’re just a lot better than New York. I don’t think it’s going to be another blowout like Game 2, but Chicago will cruise to victory and march into the second round. The moneyline at -300 offers essentially no value. That’s why I’m looking at the seven-point spread. This is the Sky’s first playoff contest of the series on the road, but this group is used to the adversity. They were 12-6 away from home during the regular season, too. Take Chi-Town to cover the spread here.

Pick: Sky -7 (-115)
