Head-to-Head History

Based on the standings alone, the Sky is clearly a much better team, and they’re the defending champions. During the regular season, these two squads met four times, with Chicago winning on three occasions, including an 89-81 victory last month. The Sky even blew out New York by 33 points back in May as well. Over the last few years as a whole, it’s been all Chi-Town in this matchup.

Liberty vs. Sky Betting Preview

New York booked their spot in the postseason with the final seed in the East, going 16-20 during the campaign. In the season finale on Sunday, the Liberty grabbed a much-needed 87-83 victory over the Atlanta Dream, their third win in a row. They also did it without Sabrina Ionescu, their best player and All-Star guard, who was resting. Ionescu showed out in 2022 in more ways than one, posting averages of 17.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 6.3 assists in 36 contests to lead the charge. Natasha Howard (15.1 PPG), Betnijah Laney (11.2 PPG), and Marine Johannes (10 PPG) are all important pieces of this team as well. There was truly no area where NY really stood out this year, ranking ninth in points and offensive rating, and sixth in defensive rating. But, the Liberty did lead the WNBA in three-point attempts at 9.7 per night, draining them at a 35.1% clip (4th). Expect Ionescu and Co. to rely heavily on the triple in this series. It’s very unlikely they have a chance of advancing in the Liberty vs Sky odds, but if this group can get hot from deep, it could potentially go the full three games. That’s about the only way New York can hurt Chicago.

After winning it all in 2021, the Sky didn’t disappoint this season. James Wade’s squad is fundamentally sound on both ends of the court, ranking top-five in offensive and defensive rating, 1st in true shooting percentage, and first in field goal percentage at 48. In a nutshell, Chicago is a very, very good team. There are contributions coming from everywhere, too. The entire starting five is averaging double-digits in points, led by Kahleah Copper. The 27-year-old is putting up 15.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2.3 dimes per contest while shooting nearly 50% from the field. WNBA legend Candace Parker is also compiling 13.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 4.5 assists. Chicago is an unselfish team with so many weapons that can do damage. We saw just that when they were crowned champs last year. The Sky finished up the campaign with a 6-4 record in their last 10 games, beating the Phoenix Mercury 82-67 on Sunday. Azura Stevens showed out for a team-high 17 points off the bench in the win.

Although on paper, it looks like Chicago should have no problem taking care of the Liberty, they cannot be taken lightly. Ionescu is coming off her best season as a pro yet, and New York won six of their final eight games. They’re full of confidence right now and will be optimistic about completing the upset here. The Sky really need to keep guarding the perimeter at a high level because the Liberty is going to make it their mission to get hot from long distance.  If the Sky can shut down their long-range shooting, it will be smooth sailing.

Liberty vs. Sky Pick

I actually do believe New York will make this a competitive series. But the Sky went 14-4 at home in 2022 and should come out ready to roll here. Although the playoffs are a different beast, they defeated the Liberty by an average of 14.3 points in the season series. Expect Chicago to come out firing and make a big statement in the opening contest, covering the spread in the process in the Liberty vs. Sky odds.
