Olympic gold medal winner and undisputed women’s lightweight boxing champion Katie Taylor fights for the first time as a pro in her home country of Ireland on Saturday, May 20, when she moves up a weight division to face undisputed junior welterweight champion, Chantelle Cameron.

In April 2022, Taylor (22-0, 6 KOs) defended her undisputed women’s lightweight title in an excellent matchup against Amanda Serrano in the first women’s boxing match to headline at Madison Square Garden. Taylor won that contest by split decision. She then defended her crown in October with a unanimous decision win over Karen Carabajal in London. Taylor and Serrano were set to rematch later this year, but that fight fell through.

Cameron (17-0, 8 KOs) became the undisputed women’s junior welterweight champion in November when she defeated Jessica McCaskill via unanimous decision in Abu Dhabi.

According to The Ring ratings, Taylor is the No. 2 women’s pound-for-pound boxer, behind Clarissa Shields. Cameron checks in at No. 4 on that list, one spot behind Serrano.

Katie Taylor has a 22-0 professional record. Before the 36-year-old fighter turned pro in 2016, Taylor has impressive amateur accolades, including a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Taylor holds the WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring lightweight titles. She has held the undisputed crown since June 2019, and has seven successful defenses of those titles to her name.

Taylor has experience at junior welterweight. In November 2019, she became a two-division champion when she defeated Christina Linardatou by unanimous decision to win the WBO title in that division.

Chantelle Cameron breakdown

Chantelle Cameron fights out of England. The soon-to-be 32-year-old, her birthday is May 14, has been a professional boxer since 2017. Cameron began accumulating titles in October 2020 when she won the vacant WBC super lightweight belt. After that, she picked up the IBF and The Ring title, eventually becoming the undisputed champ at 140 pounds with a win over Jessica McCaskill.

While Cameron has eight knockouts to her name, eight of those came in her first 10 fights. Her most recent knockout win was a May 2021 TKO victory over Melissa Hernandez.

Katie Taylor vs. Chantelle Cameron prediction and pick

This fight might be bigger than the Serrano bout at Madison Square Garden. It marks the first time two undisputed women boxing champions have ever faced off, and it will go down in history as one of the most important contests in women’s boxing. That the bout is the first time Taylor is fighting in her home country of Ireland as a pro just makes the fight more significant.

Cameron is the younger fighter. She also has a three-inch height advantage and a nearly three-inch reach advantage over her opponent. Those physical attributes could make things difficult for Taylor at 140 pounds.

Cameron is a heavy-handed puncher who can do damage on the inside. However, I would expect her to take advantage of her size advantage and be more of a counterpuncher when the smaller Taylor moves in to land her punches. Meanwhile, Taylor must use her footwork, movement, and boxing smarts to keep Cameron guessing and missing with those counters.

Best bets for Katie Taylor vs. Chantelle Cameron

This will be an incredible fight that any boxing fan should watch. Taylor answered questions about her motivation and age in the Serrano fight. I expect to see her more motivated in this fight since it is in Ireland, and she can make history. The best bet in this bout is for Taylor to win a close decision. With that, pick the fight to go the distance. There is some value in placing a bet on this fight to end in a draw, but as is always the case with that outcome, that wager should be a manageable one.

Pick: Katie Taylor to beat Chantelle Cameron via decision.
