Massachusetts passed a sports betting law in 2022, setting up the Gaming Commission to evaluate applications and hand out licenses. In January 2023, retail sports betting finally launched, and bettors were able to place their first wagers. Since then, Massachusetts has launched online sports betting by giving the green light to seven online sportsbooks. Massachusetts sports bettors now have and will continue to have the option to sign up and win on retail and online sportsbooks. Still, offshore bookies are accessible and continue to be the better option in many ways. These have lower operating costs and are able to pass these savings on to you in the form of more competitive odds and large bonuses.

Navigating the online sports betting industry in Massachusetts can be a bit of a challenge. As such, we make life easier for our readers by providing them with five important qualities to look out for when searching through online bookmakers.

Customer Service

This is paramount. When you’re discussing money, and money in big quantities, it’s absolutely imperative that you have someone you can rely on looking after your funds. When deciding on a sportsbook, make sure to check for things like how quickly they respond, their availability, and the different support options they provide. We would advise looking for all, or at least a few, of these qualities as a part of any online provider:

  • Live Chat
  • Call Center
  • Email Service
  • Forums
  • FAQs

Bovada has been around for a long time and is a well-known and beloved sportsbook.

Broad Range of Betting Lines

Certain sportsbooks focus on particular betting lines, while the vast majority offer a broad range of betting markets. We would advise finding a sportsbook provider that offers the kinds of betting options you’re interested in—whether it be NBA, NFL, or whatever market suits you, ensure that the sportsbook you’re depositing with follows that market.

Access

This is a fairly obvious point to make. But, many sportsbooks are difficult to access due to state and national laws regarding online wagering. As such, we’d suggest that bettors ensure the sportsbook they intend to deposit at offers access to players in Massachusetts.

WagerWeb is a great example of this. They are always among the first to update their odds, really setting the industry’s tone.

Bonus:
50% up to $1,000

Reputation

Similar to what we mentioned with customer service when it comes to reputation you want to be sure you’re working with a sportsbook that has your best interests at heart. This means, protecting your funds and data, as well as ensuring that you’re dealing with an organization that you can trust is very important.

Everygame has great customer service, especially their live chat, available 24/7.

Bonus:
50% up to $200
Bet now

Promotions and Bonuses

Promotions and bonuses are available throughout the year, with almost any sportsbook you’re thinking of depositing with. As such, be sure to make the most of these bonuses and promotions. This means finding a sportsbook that provides a great “welcome bonus” and features a number of seasonal promotions, which often follow the major sports leagues and events.

Potential Legal Sports Betting Sites in Massachusetts

As Massachusetts is handing out licenses, you can expect to see some of those big names such as FanDuel and BetRivers coming up on radio and television advertisements. Do not be fooled by this media blitz from Unibet and BetMGM. They spend a lot of their money on advertising, and this pumps up the price of their odds. This is why we recommend avoiding names like FanDuel when choosing your Mass sportsbooks.

Massachusetts Sports Betting Timeline

2023

Sports Betting Goes Live!

Retail sports betting finally launched on January 31, and online sports wagering went live shortly after on March 10. Seven bookies are already operating in the state: DraftKings, Caesars, and FanDuel are among the top sites now accesible for Mass residents. Despite initial delays and challenges, Massachusetts reported a record-breaking month in November 2023, with a staggering $571.7 million in online sports betting handle.

2022

The Bill Finally Passes

Massachusetts became the third state to legalize sports betting in 2022. It looks like they will begin handing out licenses in 2023, though this is far from guaranteed as the launch has been more complicated than expected.

2021

Things are looking up!

The legislature is really taking sports betting legalization seriously this year! At least 23 sports betting bills were filed in the House or Senate, with the final House bill to be approved H 3977. It passed with overwhelming support: 156-3-1. The Governor has come out to publicly support sports betting, the only roadblock is the Senate.

2020

The Senate stalls

In the last two weeks of the legislative session, sports betting language was added to an economic bill. It passed with huge support, but the Senate approved the bill without the sports betting language.

Despite the best efforts of Senator Michael Brady, who submitted to the amendment to add sports betting legalization, the session ended without Senate parity.

2019

Not much traction

Many legislators have submitted sports betting legalization bills. None received significant support or media attention.

2018

SCOTUS opens thins up

The Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act that limited the states that could legalize and regulate sports betting. This allowed states to begin licensing local sportsbooks. Many states would do so immediately.
