Thirty-two of the best CS:GO teams in the world are in Malta to compete in Season 18 of the ESL Pro League CS:GO event. The first of the four Group Stages of the tournament began on Wednesday, August 30. The event, which features a total prize pool of $850,000, comes to a close on October 1, 2023.

This week marks the fourth and final week of the Group Stages, participating in Group D: G2 Esports, Cloud9, Virtus.Pro, Team Liquid, Eternal Fire, 9INE, Complexity, and  Lynn Vision,

The Group Stage sees the 32 CS:GO teams divided into four triple-elimination format groups. The top four teams from each eight-team group advance to the single-elimination playoffs. All of the ESL Pro League Season 18 CS:GO matchups will be played in a best-of-three series. The Grand Finals will be a best-of-five format.

Last year, FaZe Clan took home the Season 17 title and the top prize of $200,000. They topped Cloud9 in the Grand Final 3-1. FaZe Clan is in Group C in 2023, and Cloud9 is part of Group D.

Playing out of Europe, G2 Esports are the betting favorite to win Group D. The team has been playing together as a unit since July 2022 and picked up new head coach Swani in January of this year. Since then, the squad has won two major CS:GO events, placing first at Intel Extreme Masters Katowice 2023 and winning $400,000. More recently, G2 Esports picked up a win at Intel Extreme Masters Cologne 2023, which was also good for $400,000 in prize money.

G2 Esports heads into Group D of Season 18 of the ESL Pro League with a 3rd-4th place finish at Gamers8 2023, where they lost to eventual event winner, Team Vitality in the semifinal round.

Cloud9

The runner-up of Season 17 of the ESL Pro League CS:GO, Cloud9, recently added two new players to its roster. The team, which plays out of the United States and Russia, picked up electroNic, and Perfecto to join the rest of the squad, which has been playing together since April 2022. The club has not had much success in big events since picking up the runner-up spot and $90,000 in Season 17, but they won BetBoom Playlist. Urbanistic in April 2023 for $165,000, and Brazy Party in May for $133,000.

In recent events, Cloud9 finished in 5th-6th at Cologne and 5th-8th at Gamers8.

Virtus.Pro is a Russian CS:GO club that did not play in Season 17 of the ESL Pro League event, but the team comes into Group D of Season 18 with some momentum after winning FiReLEAGUE Battle 2023 in July and claiming $100,000 in prize money.

Most of Virtus.Pro has played together since 2022. The team’s newest member, mir, joined in early July of this year. Virtus.Pro has been busy in the lead-up to Group D action of Season 18 of ESL Pro League CS:GO, finishing in 5th-8th at Gamers 8 and as runner-up at Dunav Party LAN in late August.
