The second global event of the 2024 Valorant Champions Tour takes place between May 23 and June 9 in Shanghai, China. That event, the Valorant Champions Tour 2024: Masters Shanghai, sees 12 of the top Valorant teams from around the world competing for the title of Masters Champion and their share of a $1 million prize pool. The winning team of the 2024 VCT Masters Shanghai tournament takes home $350,000, while the runner-up pockets $200,000. The first Masters event of 2024, Masters Madrid, took place in March. Sentinels won that tournament, winning $250,000.
The teams involved in the VCT: Masters Shanghai are the top three qualifying teams from each of the four regions of the International League: VCT Americas, VCT CN, VCT EMEA, and VCT Pacific. The tournament is split into two parts, the Swiss Stage and the Playoffs. The eight teams who did not win their league were randomly seeded for the Swiss stage. To advance to the Playoffs, a team must earn two wins before losing two matchups. Each match in the Swiss stage is best-of-three. Four teams advance out of the Swiss Stage to the Playoffs. The Playoffs are double elimination through the Grand Final. The Lower and Grand Finals of the event are best-of-five matches.

Paper Rex
The winners of the VCT: Pacific Stage 1 event, where they topped Gen.G Esports 3-2 in the Grand Final, Paper Rex are a small betting favorite to win the VCT 2024: Masters Shanghai tourney. Paper Rex finished in third place at the Masters Madrid event, losing to Sentinels 3-1 in the Lower Bracket Final. Last year, Paper Rex were the runner-up in the Valorant Champions 2023 event, losing to Evil Geniuses 3-1 in the Grand Final of that event.
The only roster change Paper Rex has made since the 2023 Champions event was moving Jinggg from substitute back to the main roster. He replaces Monyet, who moved to the reserve roster.
Since Paper Rex won the Pacific League, they get a bye in the Swiss Stage of this event.
100 Thieves
The winners of the VCT: Americas Stage 1 event, 100 Thieves, improved greatly from their performance at February’s America’s Kickoff event, where they placed 10th-11th out of 11 teams. The team fell short of qualifying for the Champions 2023 event when they placed 5th-6th out of seven teams at the Americas Last Chance Qualifier in July.
100 Thieves dominated G2 Esports at the Americas Stage 1 event, but the victory was the first for the team since they won First Strike in 2020. With that, one has to wonder if the team played over its head at the Americas Stage 1 tournament or if they have finally come together as a cohesive unit ahead of the Masters Shanghai event.
Like Paper Rex, 100 Thieves begin their play in this event in the Playoff Stage.
Fnatic
The winners of the VCT: EMEA Stage 1 event, Fnatic, improved on their 3rd-4th place finish at the VCT: EMEA Kickoff event earlier in 2024. Fnatic had a strong showing at the Valorant Champions 2023 tournament, picking up $130,000 in prize money after their fourth-place finish. The team fell 2-1 to LOUD in the Lower Bracket Semifinal of that event, the same club that knocked them out of the Upper Bracket quarterfinals.
Of the betting favorites for the VCT: Masters Shanghai event, Fnatic has been playing with the same roster for the longest. The team has been together since late 2022.
