Victor Svendson favored for first round victory in 2023 Dutch Open

The first round proper of the 2023 Dutch Open Badminton takes place on Thursday. The top seeds all enter the competition at this point. And this is when the real action gets underway. Mark Caljouw (1) of the Netherlands and Victor Svendson (2) of Denmark are the top two players who entered the competition. Both are favored to win their first-round matches and here in our latest Badminton betting picks, we tell you the best bets to make on their opening round matches.

  • What; 2023 Dutch Open Badminton
  • Where; Maaspoort Den Bosch, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands
  • When; Wednesday, October 11th – Sunday, October 15th

The Badminton tournaments keep coming thick and fast, and as a result, betting on Badminton is becoming more popular. Similar to Table Tennis, it’s hard to find any odds on a tournament winner. But daily match betting is available on all the usual markets, such as the money line, handicap spread, and total points spread.

About the 2023 Dutch Open Badminton

Last week, we looked at the Scottish Open, and this week it’s the 2023 Dutch Open. The same format from Scotland is in use this week in the Netherlands. There are 24 invited players, with eight seeds. The remaining eight players who will make up the first round of 32 players will have won through Wednesday’s qualifiers.

The defending champion is Christo Popov of France. Popov is elsewhere this week playing in the Arctic Open, so won’t be available to defend his title.

The top seed to win in the Netherlands is Dutchman Mark Caljouw. Caljouw is ranked 61 in the world. But in the season-end Race to the Finals rankings, Caljouw is down in a disappointing 91st position.

His main rival in this competition is Denmark’s Victor Svendson. Svendson is ranked 65 in the world and is in the 71st position in the Race to the Finals. Svendson is also the winner of the 2023 Swedish Open, held in May. Seeded one for the competition, Svendson defeated Finland’s Kalle Koljonen (No.3 seed) 21-14 21-11 in the final.

Svendson (-700) is taking on Kian-Yu Oei in the opening round on Thursday. He is heavily favored to defeat the 20-year-old German, currently ranked 212. Betting on the match between Svendson and Oei is available below, along with the rest of Thursday’s Round of 32.

2023 Dutch Open Betting

After Wednesday’s qualifying, the first-round lineup is now complete. There are some very one-sided betting matches, like the one between Karan Rajan Rajarajan (-5000) and Rohan Midha (+1000).

But there are also some very open-looking matches, like the clash between Dmitriy Panarin and Enogat Roy. In this matchup, the unseeded Roy (-150) is favored to beat the number six seed Panarin (+110).

Svendson looking good for a second title

We’re expecting Denmark’s Victor Svendson to go deep into this competition. We feel he could go all the way and add the Dutch Open to the Swedish Open title he won earlier in the year.

In this opening match, he faces the inexperienced German, Kian-Yu Oei. If he wins through that, he is up against the winner of Mateusz Danielak and Charles Fouyn (who had to come through qualifying) in the last 16.

In his first-round match on Thursday, Svendson is -700 to win on the money line, with Kian-Yu Oei at +400. Moving onto the handicap line, Svendson is -175 to cover the 1.5-set spread. Yu Oei is +125 to win with the spread. In the total points market, over 75.5 points is -115, and under 75.5 is also -115.

For our betting pick on the match, we are going for under 75.5 games. We feel -175 may be a touch short on the handicap, and -700 is certainly way too short to be back on the money line.

But we do expect Victor Svendson to get the match done in two sets, and we feel if he wins the first, the second may be a formality and be comfortable for the Dane. This should result in under 75.5 points.

Under is the bet for number one seed Mark Caljouw

For our second pick on the opening day’s action, we are also expecting a similar performance from the top seed, Mark Caljouw. The Dutchman is also -700 to win on the money line and -175 to cover the 1.5 set spread.

Caljouw’s opponent, Danylo Bosniuk is +400 to win on the money line and +125 to win with the spread on the handicap line.

We feel that Caljouw will win in two sets. But again, we prefer the look of -115 on under 75.5 points for our Badminton betting pick.
