Verstappen to capture 60th career win at 2024 Monaco Grand Prix

  • Max Verstappen (-145) is favored to win his third Monaco Grand Prix in four years
  • Charles Leclerc (+475) and Lando Norris (+550) have narrowed the gap with Red Bull in recent weeks
  • The 78-lap, 2.07-mile Circuit de Monaco hosts Round 8 of the F1 season on May 26, 2024

Max Verstappen picked up his fifth victory of the year at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix last weekend, but his season-long dominance over the field may be a thing of the past. Following his win in Miami, McLaren’s Lando Norris finished just  .725 seconds back of the three-time champion in Imola.

Verstappen favored in Monte Carlo

Max Verstappen (-145) is always the chalk pick, but he’s no longer a -500 favorite like recent weeks. With his tires degraded, the Red Bull driver narrowly held off a hard-changing Lando Norris (+550) for a .725-second triumph in Imola. Verstappen’s fifth victory of the season increased his lead in the drivers standings to 48 points, but he’s longer winning races by 10 to 20 seconds.

Still, pole position is crucial at the incredibly narrow Circuit de Monaco and the Dutchman has taken eight consecutive poles, matching Ayrton Senna’s record.

Norris and Leclerc narrow the gap

Lando Norris (+550) almost won back-to-back races after claiming his first victory in 110 career starts in Miami. Following his second place finish at the Emilia-Romagna GP, the young Brit said, “We are at a point now where we can say we are in the position with Ferrari and Red Bull. We have to get used to it. We are fighting for first and second now.”

Charles Leclerc (+475) finished third last weekend, securing Ferrari’s first podium finish at Imola since 2006. Having placed no worse than fourth in all seven races in 2024, Leclerc now has sole possession of second-place in the drivers standings.

All eyes on qualifying

Saturday’s qualifying holds extra importance as overtaking on the tight streets of Monaco is much harder than your average F1 event. It’s one reason that the No. 2 drivers for their respective teams, Oscar Piastri (+1100), Carlos Sainz (+1400) and Sergio Perez (+1400), are all viewed as longshots to win Sunday’s race.

Verstappen won last year’s race after capturing pole position, but did not hold the pole in 2021 when he picked up his first career win in Monte Carlo. And Charles Leclerc is still looking for his first Monaco GP victory despite holding pole position in both 2021 and 2022.

Best Bet

Max Verstappen (-145) is almost even money. While there finally appears to be a hint of competition in Formula 1, the Red Bull driver has captured 24 of the past 29 events. Given that’s he’s taken eight poles in a row, we like the Dutchman to pick up his 60th career victory in Monaco.
