49ers to squeak by Jaguars and end 3-game losing streak on Sunday

  • San Francisco (5-3) is a 2.5-point road favorite in Jacksonville (6-2) in Week 10 of the NFL season
  • The Jaguars’ Josh Allen is outplaying reining DPOY Nick Bosa with nine sacks in eight games
  • Sunday’s contest kicks off from Everbank Stadium in Jacksonville, FL at 1:00pm ET

Despite being on a five-game winning the streak, the AFC South leading Jaguars are home underdogs to a Niners team that has lost three straight. Will a week of rest cure sophomore quarterback Brock Purdy, who tossed multiple interceptions in back-to-back contests, or will San Francisco’s recent troubles continue after their bye?

Before we check the odds on this intriguing week 10 matchup, here’s where you can find the best Super Bowl betting tips and the top betting sites for NFL football in 2023.

Can Purdy rebound?

It’s almost hard to believe that Brock Purdy was once a perfect 10-0 as a starter and a 2023 NFL MVP frontrunner. Once heralded as a perfect fit for Kyle Shanahan’s system, Mr. Irrelevant has thrown five interceptions in the 49ers’ past three losses. However, he should have his full suite of weapons available in week 10 with Deebo Samuel set to return from a shoulder injury.

Christian McCaffrey will set a new NFL record if he scores a touchdown in his 18th consecutive game on Sunday. CMC leads the league with 652 rushing yards and his nine TDs on the ground only trail Miami’s Raheem Mostert (11). Of course,  McCaffrey has an additional 292 yards and 4 scores through the air.

Jaguars keep winning

Jacksonville has won five in a row, including impressive victories over the Bills, Saints and Steelers. Travis Etienne has evolved into the AFC’s version of CMC with 583 rushing yards, 266 receiving yards and eight combined TDs. The third-year back has become the focal point of a Jaguars attack that also features Christian Kirk and Calvin Ridley.

Like Purdy, Trevor Lawrence has mostly been in a game manager role this year, passing for 1,935 yards and nine touchdowns with four interceptions. San Francisco allowed a season-worst 31 points to Joe Burrow and the Bengals before their bye week. But they’ll have Chase Young in the lineup on Sunday after acquiring the edge rusher from Washington at the deadline.

Jacksonville vs San Francisco

Jacksonville is a 2.5-point home underdog at Everbank Stadium and the over/under is set at 44.5 points. Each team ranks top ten in both points scored per game and points allowed per game. Run defense is also a strength of both clubs. The Jags are allowing the third-fewest rushing yards per game (79.3) and the 49ers permit the fifth-fewest (86.1).

Opponents have torched Mike Caldwell’s D for the third-most passing yards per week (263.5) while Steve Wilks’ Niners D also ranks in the bottom half of the NFL, allowing 228.98 passing yards per game. That suggests that Lawrence and Purdy will have success on Sunday if they’re kept clean in the pocket.

Nick Bosa vs Josh Allen

Reigning Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa only has three sacks in 2022 while the Jaguars’ Josh Allen ranks fifth in the league with nine sacks entering his contract year.

The expected return of left tackle Trent Williams will be key to stopping Allen, while Chase Young’s arrival may free up Bosa to wreak havoc.

Best Bet

Most expect the Niners to come out of their bye week strong, however, Jacksonville is no pushover. We like San Francisco (-2.5) to cover but with the juice already tilting towards Kyle Shanahan’s club, it’s a stay away if it moves to minus-3. We also like the UNDER 44.5 points in a game that should be tighter and lower scoring than many expect.
