Virginia
Virginia was in the mix to win its third straight NCAA Division I Lacrosse Title in 2023. The Cavaliers won the championship in 2019 and 2021 (2020 was canceled because of COVID-19). However, the team fell in the quarterfinals, losing to Maryland by a score of 18-9. Seven games into the 2023 season, Virginia is the No. 3 ranked team in the country with a 6-1 record. The team is coming off its first loss of the year on March 18, when it dropped a tightly contested 13-14 game to No. 2 ranked Maryland.
Notre Dame
The No. 1 ranked team in the country, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are a perfect 6-0 in 2023. However, the team’s only win over a team in the top 10 is a 13-14 victory over Maryland in early March. So with that, scheduling might have something to do with how well Notre Dame is playing this year. We will find out more about the Fighting Irish team on March 25 when they face Virginia.
Notre Dame has never won an NCAA Lacrosse title. The team made the finals in 2010 and 2014 and lost to Duke in both those contests. The team finished the 2022 lacrosse season with an 8-4 record and outside the tournament.
Maryland
The defending 2022 NCAA Champions, the Maryland Terrapins are the No. 2 ranked team in the nation with a 5-2 record. Before winning the title in 2022, Maryland finished as runner-up to Virginia in 2021. Despite losses to Notre Dame and Loyola (12-7), Maryland will be a force when the tournament rolls around. The Terrapins have a tough schedule for the rest of the year with games against top-10 opponents Penn State (No. 10), Johns Hopkins (No. 8), and Rutgers (No. 6) on the horizon.
