September has already delivered two major statements in the boxing world. Ryan Garcia stopped Conor Benn in the second round on September 12th to retain his WBC welterweight title, while Jai Opetaia stopped Noel Mikaelian in the ninth round on the same card.

Earlier in the month, Katie Taylor brought her career to a close with a unanimous decision win over Flora Pili at Croke Park. Damian Knyba also upset former heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr. by unanimous decision on September 4th.

There is still a major September fight to come. Takuma Inoue defends his WBC bantamweight title against Tenshin Nasukawa in their rematch at Toyota Arena Tokyo on September 27th, giving bettors one more major market to follow before the month is out.

The biggest betting storylines this month

• Damian Knyba spoiled Andy Ruiz Jr’s return: Ruiz returned at the Prudential Center on September 4th, but Knyba used his size and jab to pull off the upset. He dropped Ruiz in the seventh round and went on to win by unanimous decision, with scores of 117-110, 114-113 and 114-113. It was a rough comeback for Ruiz after another long spell of inactivity, while Knyba picked up the biggest win of his career.
• Katie Taylor got the farewell she wanted: Taylor beat Flora Pili by unanimous decision at Croke Park on September 5th, ending her career as the undisputed super lightweight champion. More than 80,000 fans were there for the occasion, and Taylor controlled the fight to finish her professional career with a 26-1 record.
• Ryan Garcia made short work of Conor Benn: The biggest fight of the month lasted less than two rounds. Garcia dropped Benn with a right hand before forcing the referee to step in at 1:25 of the second round, successfully defending his WBC welterweight title. Garcia immediately turned his attention towards possible fights with Teofimo Lopez and Devin Haney, so his next betting market may not be far away.
• Jai Opetaia stayed unbeaten: Opetaia moved to 31-0 after stopping Noel Mikaelian in the ninth round on September 12th. Mikaelian gave him a few difficult moments, particularly with the right hand, but Opetaia took control as the fight wore on and forced the stoppage. David Benavidez was ringside, and a future fight between the pair is now one of the more interesting possibilities in the cruiserweight division.
• The month will be closed out on September 27th with a WBC bantamweight title rematch between Takuma Inoue and Tenshin Nasukawa at Toyota Arena Tokyo. Inoue beat Nasukawa by unanimous decision in November 2025 and has since defeated Kazuto Ioka, while Nasukawa earned another title shot by stopping Juan Francisco Estrada. Nasukawa has improved since their first meeting, but he still has to solve a fighter who already beat him clearly over 12 rounds.

Biggest futures, outright and win total moves this month

There has been some significant movement in the betting markets for boxing this month, and this is a closer look at some of the action worth tracking for bettors.

• Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury

There is still no official date or venue for Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury, but the location picture has changed. Cardiff’s Principality Stadium has emerged as the leading option for a late-November or December fight, with negotiations continuing over the venue’s curfew and the unusually late start time that could be needed for international broadcasters.

With both fighters picking up wins in their July fights against Mariusz Wach and Kristian Prenga respectively, there has been plenty of action on the betting odds for their eventual meeting.

Fury remains the betting favorite in available futures markets, but prices vary considerably between sportsbooks while the fight remains without a confirmed date. We would be careful about treating any one price as the definitive line until the contracts, venue and date are formally announced.

The biggest trigger for another odds move is likely to be confirmation of the fight itself. Once the venue and date are official, we should get a deeper market and a clearer picture of where bettors are putting their money.

• What comes next for Ryan Garcia?

Garcia answered the biggest betting question surrounding him this month by stopping Conor Benn in the second round. Bettors who backed the favorite never had to sweat through a long fight, with Garcia’s right hand ending the contest at 1:25 of round two.

The more interesting market now is Garcia’s next opponent. He called out Teofimo Lopez and Devin Haney immediately after the win, while a Lopez fight would give Garcia the chance to add another major welterweight title. We would expect Garcia to attract plenty of public money after such a convincing performance, although the price will matter much more against an opponent of Lopez’s level.

• Katie Taylor delivered for heavy favorite backers

Taylor entered her final fight as one of the biggest favorites on the September boxing board, and there was no upset at Croke Park. She beat Flora Pili by unanimous decision over 10 rounds and retired as the undisputed super lightweight champion.

The result was straightforward for moneyline bettors, although Taylor’s extremely short pre-fight odds offered little return. It was a better example of why boxing bettors sometimes need to move beyond the basic moneyline and look at method-of-victory or points markets when a favorite is priced that heavily.

Futures market check

Looking forward to future matchups in the world of boxing, there are some interesting lines beginning to appear on the market.

• Canelo Alvarez (-275) vs Christian Mbilli (+250)

After suffering defeat to Terrence Crawford last year, Canelo will return to the ring on October 31st to take on Canadian knockout artist Mbilli for his WBC super middleweight title in a mega fight.

Alvarez has a stunning 63-3-2 record in his career and is still widely considered to be the face of boxing, but he knows he must win this fight or face his career at the highest level being over. Mbilli has a near-perfect 29-0-1 record, including 24 knockouts, but fought to a draw against Lester Martinez in his most recent bout.

Canelo opened in the betting as a -300 favorite for the fight, which will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but he has since shortened to -275,. Mbilli, meanwhile, opened as a +230 underdog, and can now be found at around +250 if you fancy the upset.

This fight was delayed from September 12th, with Canelo dealing with some personal issues, and it’s possible that could have an impact on the betting too.

• Takuma Inoue (-225) vs Tenshin Nasukawa (+220)

A major fight in the bantamweight division will see a big rematch between Takuma Inoue and Tenshin Nasukawa.

Inoue won the title with a unanimous decision win against Nasukawa in November 2025, and both men have picked up a win in their one fight since, to set up this rematch.

Inoue, who is the younger brother of ‘The Monster’ Naoya, opened up in the betting as a -196 favorite, but has seen his odds backed into -225. Nasukawa, on the other hand, opened as a +144 underdog, but has drifted out to +220 since.

That is a huge turnaround from their first meeting, where Inoue opened up as a +400 underdog, and Nasukawa was a -650 favorite in their first fight.

But Inoue has shown his quality and skill, and already has a win, so there is value in backing him even as a -225 favorite.

What could move odds before next month’s update

It’s possible that there could be some official fight announcements coming in the near future.

• Shakur Stevenson has signed with Zuffa Boxing and is still looking to find a new opponent. Talks with Gervonta Davis have stalled for now, but after Teofimo Lopez defeated Rolly Romero for the Super Welterweight title, a rematch in a new weight class could now become something to look at.
• Agit Kabayel, who has been promoted to full world champion following Usyk’s decision to vacate, is likely to be in the frame to be Fury or Joshua’s next opponent after their fight, so it’s worth looking at potential markets opening up should there be movement in that direction.
• After Moses Itauma suffered a shock defeat to Filip Hrgovic, there are question marks about his next opponent. It’s possible he, or Hrgovic, could be lined up against the winner of Fury vs Joshua, and that’s something to keep an eye on.
• With Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao’s much-anticipated rematch being delayed, expect the odds to move as a result of the prolonged timeline. It may be an opportunity to get value too, before a new date is announced.
