Joseph Parker (-120) vs Hughie Fury (+137), Draw (+2500)
Two undefeated rising stars in heavyweight boxing will touch gloves on September 23rd at the Manchester Arena. 25-year-old Joseph Parker (23-0, 18 KOs) puts his WBO title on the line against the mandatory challenger, 22-year-old Hughie Fury (20-0, 10 KOs). This fight has been in the works for some time. After a long, drawn out purse bid, the pair agreed to face earlier this year in Parker’s home of New Zealand. But when Fury withdrew from the fight after suffering a back injury, Parker took on the lowly Răzvan Cojanu instead.
The heavyweight division is beaming with talent at the moment, with quite a few undefeated fighters. There’s the new heavyweight, Anthony Joshua (19-0), as well as contenders like WBC champ Deontay Wilder (38-0) and Luis Ortiz (27-0). A win for either Parker or Fury would place them in the upper echelons of the division.
Parker is the favorite heading into the fight, but his performance against Cojanu caused some to second-guess his ability. Ranked 14 by the WBO, Cojanu should not have posed much of a threat to the WBO champ and many expected an easy knockout for Parker. But the heavy-hitting Kiwi, who boasts an 80% knockout rate, had trouble connecting and had to settle for a comfortable decision victory.
Before that, Parker issued Andy Ruiz his first defeat, winning the contentious title fight by majority decision. The result was hotly contested and Parker has had to deal with some heavy criticism since. A convincing win against Fury would silence his critics for the most part.
This title shot has a special significance for Hughie Fury. His cousin, Tyson Fury, held the title before vacating it due to personal issues. With Tyson absent from the sport and possibly never returning, it’s up to Hughie to keep the Fury name relevant.
However, Fury doesn’t have much experience fighting at a high level. Parker will be the first noteworthy opponent he’s fought, and from what we’ve seen from his previous fights, he’s going to have a tough time. For a heavyweight, Fury doesn’t pack too much power and he’s not a particularly technical fighter either.
Pick: Joseph Parker (-120)
