- Polly Pocket (+250) and Hot Wheels (+300) are favored to be the next Mattel movies released in cinemas
- Barbie has already raked in more than $1 billion at the global box office
- Mattel has publicly announced that 14 different movies are in development so far
Some call it “feminist propaganda”, others say it’s a feature-length Mattel commercial. Either way, Barbie is Warner Bros. biggest movie of all-time, raking in $1.34 billion worldwide and counting. Naturally, the overwhelming success of the Margot Robbie-Ryan Gosling vehicle has led to speculation on what Mattel toy will be turned into a movie next.

Polly Pocket opens as the favorite
Polly Pocket (+250) is the leader in the clubhouse. Not only is there already a script, the star of Emily In Paris, Lily Collins, is attached. After Greta Gerwig became the first female director of a $1 billion flick, Mattel is also sticking to the feminist filmmaker formula, hiring the creator of Girls, Lena Dunham, to write and direct.
Robbie Brenner, the producer who runs Mattel Films and produced Barbie, says, “We are thrilled about it. Hopefully, we’ll be making that at some point in the future.”

Hot Wheels riding shotgun
Hot Wheels (+300) is a little behind in the development stage, but it has a few things going for it. One, it’s the top-selling toy in the world. Two, it’s being produced by blockbuster hit-maker J.J. Abrams, who has described the adaptation as “grounded and gritty.”
Other Mattel toy movies
A script for American Girl (+500) is in the works, but no director or star has been formally attached. Still, this is a toy that actually sells so there might be more of a market for it than Polly Pocket, which could stall in production. Barney (+500) has Daniel Kaluuya of Black Panther fame lined up as a producer, but not much else. Brenner says the film about the big purple dionosaur will “have adult themes — and sort of be a little bit off-kilter.”
The Wishbone (+500) toy is based off a Jack Russell terrier toy. The movie will be family-friendly adventure comedy directed by Peter Farrelly of Dumb & Dumber fame.

Longshots to hit theaters
Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots (+600) has Fast & Furious star Vin Diesel lined up to star, but the script is still in development. Thomas & Friends (+800) has Monster’s Ball director Marc Forster at the helm. Magic 8 Ball (+1600) has been teased as “a PG-13 thriller.” And, finally, UNO (+1600) has a writer, Marcy Kelly, who somehow has to write a film about a kid’s card game. Good luck with that, Marcy!
Best Bet
This one is easy. Nobody wants to watch a movie about Polly Pocket. If the toy isn’t derivative of Barbie enough, the movie sure will be. Instead, let’s back J.J. Abrams, the man who brought the Star Trek franchise back to life. With Hot Wheels (+300), he has intellectual property that people will actually pay money to see.
