2021 Remington Springboard Mile Picks

The Kentucky Derby trail winds its way to Oklahoma on Friday, December 17 for the Remington Springboard Mile! In addition to Road to the Kentucky Derby points (10-4-2-1) for its top four finishers, the horse race betting event also offers a lucrative $400,000 purse. It drew a competitive field of nine juveniles to go a mile on the dirt, as their springboard into the Derby picture!

The race was inaugurated in 2001 as the Remington Park MEC Mile, and got its current name in 2009. It became a Kentucky Derby points race in 2017. Though the race has yet to produce a Kentucky Derby winner, some very good horses have come out of it, including three-year-old champion Will Take Charge, who ran second to 128-1 longshot Texas Bling in 2012.

Remington Springboard Mile Favorites

The likely favorite is #5 Classic Moment. He is one of two in the field for trainer Steve Asmussen, who has won this race six times, including two of the last three runnings. Though he steps up from maiden company to face winners for the first time, he comes from classy Churchill Downs, his pedigree should get him a mile, and jockey Stewart Elliott takes the call.

Elliott also rode #1 Concept, Asmussen’s other runner, last time out. Concept is buried on the fence, and will likely be forced to send for speed. The good news for Concept is that he is already a stakes winner over the course, but that came at one turn and he has never stretched out this far before.

The Intriguing Horses

#9 Osbourne, for trainer Ron Moquett, has the right stuff to take on the Asmussen pair. He has tactical speed from the outside gate, and second off the lay he should be in good form. It is his first time stretching to a route, but he is bred to get at least that far. And, it weighs in his favor that jockey Julien Leparoux sees fit to ship out and ride.

With a few runners who do have speed, if they lock up and go fast early, it could set up nicely for #3 Bye Bye Bobby, who will try to make it two Springboard Miles in a row for trainer Todd Fincher. Though his debut win was only six furlongs, it did come in a stakes race against winners, and he is bred well to stretch out. Look for him to keep improving going long.

The Bet-Against

#2 Make It Big does lure Jose Ortiz to ride, but also has a lot to prove. His form has come against Florida-breds, and Gulfstream is a strange track in the sense that horses who run gaudy races there often cannot repeat that form elsewhere. He is likely to be an underlay in the Springboard Mile.

Interesting Longshots

#6 Rowdy Rascal has won his last three races. This is a class test — those three outings came against Oklahoma-breds, and now he steps up to face open company. But, he has good pace versatility, and he looked as strong as ever in a one-mile win over the Remington course last month.

#7 Rich Strike has only won against maiden claimers, but he stepped up to two turns against allowance company at Keeneland last out and made good account while running a troubled third. He has built fitness, after three two-turn races, and is another who can shine if the frontrunners get a little too intrepid early.
