Breeders’ Stakes 2023: Tito’s Calling can work the right trip, beat the boys

The final jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown is coming up on Sunday, October 1: the Breeders’ Stakes at Woobine Racetrack. The 1 ½-mile race on the grass is open to three-year-old Canadian-bred horses. The race is always an exciting betting opportunity, especially since it features so many horses trying such a long distance for the first time.

There is no Canadian Triple Crown up for grabs this year, after Paramount Prince won the King’s Plate and Velocitor took the Prince of Wales. However, the race is not only one of the most important events on the Canadian racing calendar, but also  one of the best horse racing betting events of the autumn.

Keep in mind that the morning line announced by the track is no guarantee for what price you will actually get on the horse. After all, that is just the track’s estimate for what the price will be. Instead, your best bet is to play the Breeders’ Stakes online. Online sportsbooks offer fixed-odds wagering on major races, meaning you can lock in your price the moment you bet.

Since prices at the track will fluctuate all the way until post time, betting online is the way to go. This is because, once you see a price that is better than a horse’s actual chance to win, you can lock in that overlay just by placing your money on the race!

Breeders’ Stakes Favorites

The Wonder Where is the classic long-distance turf race for Canadian-bred fillies, and Tito’s Calling comes out of a smart victory in that 1 ¼-mile affair. Specifically, she was able to track a crawling pace and kick on well to win by four lengths over Wickenheiser. The extra quarter-mile is a question for her as it is for everyone in the field, but that last-out win showed exactly the skills she needs to win right back against the boys here.

The in-form Paramount Prince got things his own way in the Queen’s Plate; on paper, the race could set up very similarly in the Breeders’. The question is whether he is going to stay the mile and a half, since on paper his pedigree is not the best for it. But, he already defied his pedigree going 1 ¼ miles in the Plate, proving he can just keep going if he can clear the likes of British Artillery and Hemlo Gold.

Wickenheiser, the second-place finisher in the Wonder Where, has the best distance pedigree in the field. Though she could not reel in Tito’s Calling late in that last race and risks having to finish into a similarly slow pace, she could find a better spot if she starts better in this race. Her pedigree gives her a great chance to keep going if others tire, and jockey Rafael Hernandez is a great long-distance turf rider who has won the Breeders’ before.

Breeders’ Stakes Exotics Horses

British Artillery needs to move forward significantly to be a threat in this spot, but there are reasons he can. He has one of the best long-distance turf pedigrees in the field, and this will be his first try at anything longer than 1 1/16 miles on grass. He also has tactical speed; in a race where the pace could be downright languid, he should get a good position and keep finding more at a big price.

It is a concern on the win end that Elysian Field could not reel in Paramount Prince in the Queen’s Plate, especially since the pace shapes up as slow again. However, she chased on well to finish second, running like a horse with at least some upside to keep clunking along at this mile-and-a-half trip. Even though a win would be a surprise, she should be good enough to chase on for exotics.
