#14 Dubawi Legend is the likely favorite. He has real international class, coming in off of a second-place finish in the tough Dewhurst Stakes (G1). However, he has only won in novice company, stretches to a mile for the first time, and drew the far outside gate. He is bred to stretch out and his tactical speed is an asset, but this is no easy task at a short price.
Charlie Appleby has a pair in the two inside stalls, #1 Modern Games and #2 Albahr. Modern Games has won three of his last four, and the ground should suit, but it is his first mile race and the rail draw is tough. Albahr is a G1 winner at a mile, but the near-inside post is not a good draw for a horse who can be as poor from the gate as Albahr is.
#10 Portfolio Company will also be heavily bet, trained by Chad Brown and with top West Coast rider Flavien Prat in the irons. He has the tactical speed to handle this relatively outside gate, and all three of his previous races have come at two turns. And, though he has tables to turn on Coinage, Coinage oughtn’t have such an easy lead as he did in the With Anticipation.
Other Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Contenders
#4 Tiz the Bomb is trained by Ken McPeek, who has caught fire lately. He has the tactical versatility to handle this relatively outside gate. Though he will have to run a career best in this spot, his ability to handle large fields and outside gates is already well proven, meaning he should be able to work a trip and hold his own.
#3 Dakota Gold will take some interest off of his two wins, including a victory in the one-mile Nownownow at Monmouth on September 26. However, the relatively inside gate is a drawback, and trainer Danny Gargan tends to underperform a bit in graded stakes races. He will take some money off of that big-figure win at Monmouth, but seems more likely as just a pace factor.

#5 Slipstream has won his last two on the turf in two different styles, one on the front end and another from off the pace, something that should give him options in a big field. Trainer Christophe Clement shines with first-time routers, and Slipstream’s pedigree appeals for the step up in trip.
