The 2024 MotoGP season opened earlier this month with the Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar. Francesco Bagnaia won the MotoGP championship in 2023 and took first place in the race, winning in Qatar for the first time under the MotoGP banner. Bagnaia, who also won the MotoGP title in 2022, is currently the betting favorite to win the 2024 championship. The 27-year-old, Bagnaia is the defending winner of the Portugal Grand Prix, which takes place on Sunday.
This year’s Portugal Grand Prix will be held at Autódromo Internacional do Algarve. The course is 2.85 miles long. The track has nine right corners and six left corners, and the longest straightaway on the course is 3,182.41 feet. Last year, Marc Marquez started the race in the pole position, while Bagnaia began in the No. 2 spot. Aleix Espargaró had the race’s fastest lap, completing lap nine in 1:38:872. Maverick Viñales finished the race as the runner-up to Bagnaia, coming in 0.687 seconds behind the victor. Marco Bezzecchi placed third.

Francesco Bagnaia
The defending MotoGP champion, Francesco Bagnaia, should be confident and comfortable heading into the Portugal Grand Prix. Not only did he win the GP last year, but he also won the sprint race, beating Jorge Martin by .307 seconds. Bagnaia placed second in Portugal in 2021 and finished in the No. 8 spot on the track in 2022.
Bagnaia has been the dominant force in MotoGP over the past three years, winning two world titles and picking up 18 grand prix race victories. Last year, Bagnaia, who rides for Ducati Lenovo, picked up seven wins. However, he faded a bit in the second half of the season, “only” winning two races of the final 10. However, he did have four second-place finishes and two thirds during that time.
Bagnaia finished 16 grand prix races last year and made the podium in all but one of those races. He has been one of the most consistent MotoGP riders over the past three years.
Jorge Martin
Jorge Martin crashed on this track in 2021 and missed three races following that accident because of broken bones in his hands, leg, and ankle. The 26-year-old has never finished a Grand Prix race on this course, but he performed well in the sprint race in 2023, finishing in the runner-up spot.
Martin, who is an aggressive driver, started his 2024 season with a third-place finish in Qatar. With that, he will be confident heading into the race in Portugal.
Martin had a breakthrough MotoGP season last year, finishing in second place overall.
Martin rides a Ducati for Prima Pramac Racing. He finished 2023 with four Grand Prix victories, including three of the last nine races of the year. A fast rider, Martin started every grand prix in 2023, but he had four races that he did not finish.
Marc Marquez
Marc Marquez began the 2024 season with a new team, and he performed well in Qatar, placing fourth in the opening race of the MotoGP season. After 11 years with Honda, the 30-year-old is now on a Ducati for Gresini Racing. Marquez was dominant between 2013 and 2019, winning six world titles and placing third in 2015, the only year during that stretch when he failed to win the world championship. Things haven’t gone his way since then as he has only won three race wins in the past three years, and zero victories in 2022 and 2023. His best placing in 2023 was third in Japan.
Marquez’s best finish in Portugal came in 2022 when he finished in the No. 6 spot. He did not finish the GP race last year, but he started on the pole and came in third place in the sprint race.
As long as he is healthy, Marquez remains a threat to pick up a win.
