Golden State Warriors breakdown and analysis
The Golden State Warriors had a hectic day before they faced the Memphis Grizzlies at home at the Chase Center on Monday. Early in the day, news broke that Warriors’ assistant coach Mike Brown was named the next coach of the Sacramento Kings. While everyone was absorbing that news, Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr tested positive for COVID-19. With that, Brown was tasked with leading the Warriors bench. The team also found out that day that Draymond Green’s college teammate and best friend, Adreian Payne had been shot and killed.
When game time came around, the Warriors focused on the task at hand and defeated the Memphis Grizzlies. Monday’s win put the Warriors one victory away from a berth in the 2022 NBA Western Conference Finals.
The win did not come easily. With under 10 minutes left in the game, Golden State was trailing the Grizzlies. However, the Warriors went on to outscore the Grizzlies 12-4 in the next three minutes and pull ahead for the win. Steph Curry was very effective in the fourth quarter, scoring 18 of his 32 points in the final stanza of the game.
Memphis Grizzlies breakdown and analysis
The Memphis Grizzlies had opportunities to pull event with the Golden State Warriors on Monday. Memphis had an early 15-8 lead in Game 4. With 9 1/2 minutes left in the game, Memphis had an eight point lead, but they failed to hold on for the win.
Ja Morant did not play in Game 4 because of a knee injury he sustained in Game 3. Morant, who is the Grizzlies best player and the team’s leading scorer was missed. Jaren Jackson Jr. had a good game for the Grizzlies with 21 points, which was an improvement on his playoff average, but his effort was not enough to lift the team to victory. Morant has averaged 27.1 points per game for the Grizzlies in the postseason. He had put up 34, 47 and 34 points in the first three games of the series against Golden State.
There is no update as of this writing on if Morant will play in Game 5.
Our pick
With a win tonight, the Golden State Warriors will move to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2019. The past four times the Warriors made it to the conference finals they have moved onto the NBA Final. I’m not going to predict the Warriors will represent the West in the 2022 NBA Final, but I do think they finish off the Grizzlies in Memphis tonight.
