How to Read NBA Odds

NBA Point Spread Odds
The point spread is often just referred to as the spread and is represented by the number chosen by each sportsbook to encourage bettors to wager on the underdog and not just the favorite. This is the essence of spread betting, offering bettors the option to wager on something other than the favorite, especially popular during the NBA Playoffs.
For NBA spreads, the negative value means the team is favored by that figure. The positive figure in NBA spreads indicates the lead given to the underdog before the game begins. Let’s take a look at the example below for a clearer explanation.
If the negative value is -7.5 and the positive is +7.5, it means that the team favored to win must do so by at least 8 points to cover the spread. The underdog team can lose by seven points or win to cover the spread.
Bettors will often see Vegas NBA odds attached to the spread. Here are some examples of this:

In order to make a profit at odds of -110, the bettors would have to place a wager of $110, which would payout at $100. These odds aren’t favorable, but you’ll see a range of odds at the spread value.
NBA Moneyline Odds
The most common form of betting line in the US, it’s common in NHL, NFL, MLS, and many other major sports leagues. One of the most common bets in moneyline odds is to wager on the underdog. This means that you would wager on the NBA team that’s least likely to win the game, commonly highlighted with a + symbol before a number—something like +180.
Let’s set up an example of what bets might look like; so if you want to bet on a favorite on the moneyline at -200, you would wager $200 to win $100. Betting on the underdog you would risk much less money in order to win a $100+ payout.
NBA Over-Under Odds
The Over-Under is unlikely to be something new to bettors, as it’s one of the most common NBA basketball betting lines alongside the moneyline. Oddsmakers will set a number by estimating how many points they feel will be scored in an NBA game by both teams combined, or for just a single side. The number will be the figure at which bettors will stake on as to decide whether the total will go above or below this figure.
An example of this might be if the oddsmakers set the total at 204.5 and the bettor wagers on it to go over. This would mean the combined total would have to be 205 or more in order for the wager to payout. Equally, if the bettor bets on the under, the total would have to be 204 or below for the bet to payout.
NBA Futures Odds
Futures markets are an excellent way for bettors to get in on the action, but without having to follow each game and the teams’ performances with too much interest.
