Betting to win the 2023 Grey Cup

This leads us nicely onto the betting to win the 2023 Grey Cup. The Toronto Argonauts (+115) are the favorites to win with the best sportsbooks. The Argonauts are the defending champions, having beaten the Winnipeg Blue Bombers by just one point (24-23) in an amazing final at the Mosaic Stadium in 2022.

This brings us nicely onto the second favorites who are the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at +175. The Bombers last won the Grey Cup in 2021, also at Tim Hortons Field, and will be looking to repeat that victory at the same venue this year. Third in the betting is the BC Lions at +350, with the Montreal Alouettes at +900, the outsiders to win the trophy for the first time since 2010.

Winnipeg vs. BC Lions; Recent Form

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers topped the West Division table in the regular season with a 14-4 record. They come into the final on a four-match winning streak that includes wins over the Argonauts (31-21), the Lions (34-26 O/T), the Elks (45-25), and the Stampeders (36-13).

The win over the Lions was a hard-fought one, with the teams level at 26 points each at the end of regulation time. The Lions did have a ten-point lead at the halfway stage and a seven-point lead heading into the final quarter. So, to lose from such a strong position against Saturday’s opponents will have been a real sickener for Rick Campbell’s team, especially with the Lions having home-field advantage on the day.

The Lions (12-6) did recover from that defeat to beat the Tiger-Cats 33-30 the following weekend. With qualification for the postseason long confirmed, Campbell’s team eased off in their final regular season match, losing 41-16 to the Stampeders. They then exacted immediate revenge by defeating the Stampeders (41-30) in the West Division semi-final at BC Place to stamp their ticket to this Saturday’s final.

Our Picks

In the regular season, the gap between the two teams in the division wasn’t huge. The Blue Bombers had a win percentage of .778, compared to .667 for the Lions. That sounds big, but it equates to a 14-4 record for Winnipeg and a 12-6 record for the Lions. There were only two wins between the teams, and one of those wins was the head-to-head between the two teams in British Columbia that needed overtime to decide.

In the reverse fixture in Winnipeg at the start of August, it was a completely different story. The Blue Bombers stormed to victory over the Lions by a 36-point margin (50-14).

We don’t expect a repeat of that. But we do expect a win for Winnipeg. The recent overtime win over the Lions will have dented confidence. Winnipeg also has a far superior offensive record, scoring 99 points more than the Lions in the regular season.

The neutrals will want a final between Winnipeg and Montreal, and we feel they will get one. We are going for Winnipeg to win and cover the spread for our betting pick.
